Has anyone given their babies broccoli puree? I make my own baby food, and I noticed that it isn't available in jared baby food. just curious... (my girls are 8 months...) We eat a lot of it, so I thought it would make sense to give it to them, but just want to make sure I am not missing anything.
For my older son, it was one of the later veggies we did. It is harder to get smooth in a puree so if you are doing chunkier purees, it would be good for your babies.
:wavey: I've done broccoli puree. When I want a smooth puree I use a hand blender, it had no trouble with broccoli, then once I'm doing small lumps/textured puree I find a potato masher works fine. Broccoli does have a strong taste though so it's probably a good idea to mix it with something else, rather than serving on it's own. Potato goes well or some cheese sauce (if your kids like cheese) will balance out the flavour. ETA: I've never done asparagus, it's not something I eat much and it's not in any of my recipe books so I hadn't really thought of it, but I can't imagine there'd be anything wrong with giving them a little.
I made broccoli puree too, and didn't see any issues. they gobbled it up. I think there's something about making your own carrots that you need to be worried about nitrates - and maybe not adding back in the cooking water to thin it down. but I haven't heard of anything with broccoli.
Broccoli definitely won't hurt them. I think the reason you don't see it more often in baby foods is because it has such a strong taste & can be a bit gassy.
I've avoided broccoli because it makes me gassy and I thought it might do the same for the boys. Also cauliflower, cabbage, and avocados.
We've had no issues with pureed broccoli so far (9.5 months old). I also give them small pieces of well cooked broccoli to practice feeding themselves. Works best when there isn't much stem to chew on. They usually only eat one piece and then make a yucky face. I usually serve "bitter" foods mixed with a fruit. They gobble it down then.
