bright red rash on leg

My girls have had diarrhea for over a month now. I've made several calls to the pedi to try this and that. We have a visit on Monday for their 15 month well visit, so I'm going to address it with him then.

So today Emma had diarrhea FOUR times (the most in one day over this month). I noticed she was a lot crankier than normal and slept a long time during her naps. Tonight when I was putting on PJ's, I noticed a bright red rash on the back of her leg, right below where the diaper would end. It was a pretty big area and stopping right where the diaper gathers.

She didn't feel feverish. I figured if it's still there in the a.m. I will call the doctor and see what they think but now I'm nervous because it was so RED. WDYT?

Michelle, I don't know what it could be, but I think you have the right idea about phoning the doctor if it's still there tomorrow. Poor little Emma, does it seem to bother her?

So sorry for your poor baby!

My kids always got diahrea with teeth. Could that be a cause of it, since you said it wasn't a milk allergy. The rashy thing sounds like either a bit of eczema (my kids are kings/queens of that), or maybe a reaction to something (did you change diapers-mine reacted to some of the generic ones). Again, your poor babies-and poor momma-it's so hard not knowing what you should be doing.

Did you put anything on it? I would try some hydrocortizone or triple antibiotic.

She was crankier today, but the rash didn't show up until after the afternoon diaper change.

They have both had the diarrhea so I'm sure it's not teeth. I did buy Baby Dry instead of Cruisers, but they have worn them before. Do you think it would be possible to have a reaction now and not before? Definitely not eczema. Lauren and I have that so I've seen it many times.

I didn't put anything on it. Never even thought of that. Oh man, I hope she is okay.

Are they both not teething?? What if they both are teething?

Do they have any harder poops in between all the diarrhea?

Michelle, my girls wear the cruisers too and I put the baby dry on them b/c I was given a pack and Aidyn broke out in a butt rash. Don't know if that helps or not, but def give the doc a call if it's still there. Hope she's ok! You sure the big D is not milk related?

Emma only has two teeth with absolutely no signs of more. I would be surprised if it were considering they've never pooped the same (tmi, I know).

They haven't had any normal (what is normal for them) poops since this has started.

My girls were on a milk-based formula so we were told we should have no problems transitioning to milk. This all started three months after being on whole milk.

Keep those guesses coming though. We're sure to figure this out!!

I went in to give her a binky because she was crying and she had diarrhea - again! Neither one has EVER pooped once they have gone down for the night and until I go to bed (I check on them before I hit the sack). Luckily, the rash was no worse. She was SO upset having her diaper changed (I could tell she was very uncomfortable from all the poopin' so I rocked her back to sleep. What's better than being rocked by mama? :(

Oh, poor Emma! I feel so bad for the little cutie. What else could be causing it??? Owen had milk problems & always had diarrhea but he had problems even on the formula & had to be switched to soy. I know once or twice when my kids have had problems like this, the doctor had us take them off of all dairy until it cleared up because it can aggravate stomach problems, not necessarily the cause but can make it worse. Just a thought....

My girls are allergic to dairy, eggs and wheat. They had loose stools until I completely eliminated everything from their diet. We had eliminated dairy first since they had other reactions besides loose stools. They then were tested and diagnosed with an allergy to wheat and eggs. Once we eliminated those items they finally had hard stools. We also had a reaction to baby dry diapers along with Target brand. We have to use either cruisers or Luvs. They also react to different wipes so if you have switched those lately that could be the cause.

No suggestions, just sending the little ballerinas a :hug99: How is the rash now?

Did the reaction happen upon the introduction to food? Mine have been eating the same thing for months now. Is it possible to develop an allergy well after they've been eating everything? Something to look into I guess.

It's fine! When I changed her this morning, it was slightly pink but NOTHING like it was last night. I was SO worried about her last night.

:hug99: Lots of hugs! Glad it's a little better today!

My girls were on milk-based formula too but they can't handle whole milk. But Aidyn had a reaction right away so I don't know if it's possible to have it show up after a while. Hope you get some answers soon!

You can develop an allergy to something out of the blue. Usually you will see serious allergies such as peanuts pretty young, but others may not develop until older. My mom never had problems with latex growing up, but she has a minor reaction to them at the doctor's office now. How long have they been drinking whole milk? That would be my first suspect even if they drank regular formula.

My son has a dairy allergy and I would guess it's the dairy too. Yours might just be lactose intolerant which means they have a hard time digesting the lactose, hence the loose stools. I would try no dairy for a while, see what your DR thinks or recommends, but it sounds like a dairy issue to me.

    Good luck!

The dairy happened right away but I didn't know that is what it was until a few months down the road. Once the dairy was eliminated, I thought we were good. They always had loose stools so I thought that was just how they were. As I introduced new foods, I watched for a raw bottom because that was the typical reaction to bananas, soy, etc. I got tired of introducing foods and guessing if we should eliminate it so I asked for the girls to be tested by my allergist. They did a blood test and discovered the wheat and egg along with other fruits and vegetables. Once I eliminated all of them their stools hardened within a week. I did give them grapes last week and their bottoms got raw after about 3 days. Once I eliminated them they cleared up in a few days. Reactions are so different in everyone but the most noticable thing is they slept better, they were no longer whiny and they stopped clinging to me.
