My sil has a 1 month old baby and she is breastfeeding her. In one more month (when the baby is almost 2mths old) I will be watching her while her mother works. Now my question is can you give a baby a pcifier if you are breastfeeding? She read somewhere that you shouldn't but I thought I would come to you guys for advice. She was going to but she also gives a bottle everynow and then (which I will be doing when I watch her) so she doesn't know if this will confuse the baby or not. Or if she can give a pacifier should she wait for a certain age? Thank you for any help would love to hear if you tried one how it went.

I did use a pacifer with my son. I didn't start until 4 to 5 weeks when breastfeeding was really well established and I realized this boy just really wanted to suck! I could tell the difference between nutritive and non-nutritive sucking so I tried the binky and what a relief!! I also fed on demand and would offer the breast first if he was showing hungry signs and use the binky after he had fed and was just sucking for comfort. I also started the bottle around 5 or 6 weeks and didn't have any trouble with confusion (he nursed and I pumped through 13 months, I went back to work at 12 weeks).
    Hope that helps.

C&A both got pacifiers and breastfed until a year, so I think it's ok. Sometimes babies need to have some non-nutritive sucking and a pacifier can really help!

You can give your baby a pacifier if BFing, its best to wait until breastfeeding is going smoothly. We tell our moms in our clinics to wait until the baby is at least 6-8 weeks old and breastfeeding has been well established, this also when we recomend offering a bottle for moms. Some Moms go to work sooner than 6 weeks so its not set in stone, mom just needs to make sure that BF is going smoothly before introducing it to avoid any nipple confusion.

we did pacifiers right from the start, and have never had a problem. I don't know what I'd do without them!

Same here...pacifiers from the start as well as the occasional bottle. Just our choice, but my LC told me it was fine as long as we offered the breast often.

We started using pacifiers at about 3 weeks... I didn't have any trouble breastfeeding in the beginning, though- I think if I had we'd have waited a bit longer. Pacifiers were a lifesaver for us!
I would think by 2 months your sil's baby should be able to take a pacifier without compromising breastfeeding.

Thank you for your responses I will let her know. She said she is getting soar because she is breastfeeding all the time because she always wants to suck. The baby has gotten the bottle a few times and she is adjusting well to that and breastfeeding.

    Thank you again for responding.

Mine had pacifiers from the start. DS always liked his, but DD did not us it much until about 6 months. We had no issues. We also did a bottle of EBM every so often until 4 months, no problems.

After one week of torture, I went to the hospital lactation consultant crying saying that they want to nurse all the time. SAhe was nice enough to give me a couple cool NICU pacifiers (they have holes in the middle and are made to see if a preemie is sucking properly). We used them and nursed without problem until 10 months. She said they were special ordered from Hawaii. So, yes, we did both but it was a special pacifier.

Though I didn't plan to, both babies had pacifiers from when they were in the hospital. Nicholas started it because he was in the NICU for a couple of days and they insisted on them having a pacifier to help regulate his breathing. Once Nicholas used it, I figured I might as well try it with Andrew as well. Neither have ever had a problem with nursing...they actually have both always done really well with it. They also took a bottle from about 10 days old (EBM) :)

I have breatfed and used a pacifier from day 1. No problems here. Babies just like to suck, if they are hungry they wont take a pacifier! But they will tend to eat even if they're not hungry... Go figure! Anyway, best of luck to you!
