I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with getting their insurance company to pay for a breast pump. Or atleast part of it? I found that if your doc finds it medically necessary they will, and twins turns out to be one of those reasons :) and if your insurance paid part how much did they cover? I have Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield with an HSA. Thanks everyone!

My insurance covered the cost of renting a breast pump up to the cost of purchasing it brand new. I rented it for three months and insurance paid for each month.

My insurance covers 50% of medical equipment but when I called to verify I was told that they don't cover breast pumps under any condition. A friend of mine was able to get a Medela for $50, so I know it happens!

I called my insurance company and they said they would only cover it if there was a medically reason. And the reasons they gave were, if you had to be separated from your baby (baby having to stay in NICU or transferred to another hospital) or if you had some disease or illness that the baby could get through nursing. Maybe I should call them back and ask about the twin thing.

When my girls were born in 2007, our insurance would not cover any part of a breast pump. In 2008, our insurance started covering the cost of renting or buying a pump as long as a doctor said it was "medically necessary"... which could be for breastfeeding problems, baby in the NICU, etc.

We have Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal, in case that helps. Either way - check your insurance carrier's booklet or website; it's listed quite clearly in ours that breast pumps (and medically prescribed formula like Nutramigen) are covered at 100%.

yeah joyful I found it by inernet search a medical supply company that had the ICD9 code for your doc to use and all the different diagnosis' to go with the codes, they said it's considered durable medical equipment I looked mine up and according to my packet my plan I pay 0% for those after my deductible is met! Yay! And good to know idril to check if we have a rx formula need!! Also good to know I could use my hsa if it didn't cover it or I had to pay for part of it. This is one of those websites that explains how to get insurance to cover them
