this may sound silly, but I wonder anyway. I've heard MANY times over the past 10 years or so that boy babies have a higher rate of NICU time as compared to girl babies at the same gestation. and I kinda believe it. my DS who was full term at 39w 5d when he was born even ended up in NICU for a day, while my girls have never seen a NICU. so, I'm just wondering if anyone knows where I could find info on the differences?

I'll be having these boys sometime in the next 7-11 days and will be 36weeks. I'm really just curious as to what the average NICU stay for boys is since everyone keeps telling me boys for some unknown reason just don't do as well as girls.

also anyone who would like to post with the gender of their babies, gestational age and NICU time. that could help satisfy my curiosities as well.
    thanks!

I had ID boys and they were born at 34 weeks and spent 11 days in the NICU then 3 more days in the special care nursery. The nurses told me before I delivered that boys don't do as well as girls, and caucasion babies don't do as well as african americans, I'm not sure why. Interestingly enough, evey baby in the NICU was a boy for the whole two weeks we were there.

Well I don't have experience, but my aunt works in the NICU and 3 years ago they had a set of triplet boys born at 34 weeks and they had zero NICU time. They were monitored, but all went home after 4 days.

For the most part girls do better in the NICU. The ones that usually have the hardest time are caucasian boys...the term they use is "whimpy white boy syndrome".

Mine were born at 36 weeks 2 days and both stayed in NICU for 5 days on IV antibiotics, which wasn't so bad since I stayed in the maternity ward downstairs, and then we all went home together. My bigger twin had some fluid in his lungs (apparently quite common with c-section babies) so he was being watched for that too. Good luck with your little boys! [IMG]

I had B/G twins. Gillian was 5lbs 12 oz and never saw the NICU. Garrett was 5 lbs, and he spent 10 days there. But, he was C-section and she was vaginal. Also, they had to put me under for the section, because my epidural was wearing off.
The nurses/docs in the NICU concured with the opinions above they said just to start off he had 3 strikes against him:
    1. male
    2. caucasian
    3. twin B (smaller etc)

All is good now, they are 2 1/2 and perfect. He outweighs his sister by about 5 lbs these days!!

I had b/g twins. Jackson (twin B) weighed 5 lbs 9 oz and Hannah(twin A) weighed 6 lbs 12 oz. Jackson came home with me and Hannah spent ten days in the NIC. All the NICU nurses couldn't believe Hannah had to go to the NICU and Jackson didn't.

I've heard this as well, in regards to boys and NICU time, specifically related to lung development and function. My twin B (Nicholas) was the smaller twin by 4 ounces and spent 8 days in the NICU due to RDS. They started him on a nasal canula, then on to CPAP and then he ended up being intubated for 48 hours and getting a dose of surfactant for his lungs. He was also jaundiced and under the lights and fed via IV on TPN. His doctors said that although he was born at 36w5d, he was more like a 34-35 weeker based on his lung development. Interestingly enough, Twin A (Jackson) had no NICU time and was perfectly fine.

I hope all goes well for you! Good luck!

From what I was told in the NICU..the babies that do the best are
    1.African American Females
    2.Caucasian Female
    3.African American Male
    4.Caucasian Male
    5.Asian Female
    6.Asian Male

Don't know who did the breakdown but I have been told that soo many times. Mine was called the wimpy white boy many a times!!! They also kept calling him baby b bc he was the sicker one, I had to correct them and tell them he was baby a. Mitchell spent 87 days and Kenna spent 63 days. But they were way early. My other two kids were 36 weekers and spent no nicu time
