I watch a little boy who is about to turn 2.5 years old. He's doing awesome on the potty, caught on REALLY fast. He won't poop though, but is dry ALL day...sometimes even through his nap (heck, my 3.5 year old twins have NEVER been dry through a nap before...lol). Anyway, with boys...have you trained them standing up to pee or sitting down? He's kind of short and I would have to get a stool, etc. for the bathroom if he was to stand up and pee. He's been goin gon the little potty (with the splash guard) and he sits to pee.

    Just curious!

My boys all learned by sitting first, but it didn't take long(within a couple of weeks) before they were standing.

I thought this would be the cleanest way to PT, but DH wouldn't hear of it. So I put DH in charge. Thankfully, it was warm when we PT'd DS and he and Daddy did most of it outside (aiming, holding, ect.) then when he got that down, It was back to me for teaching him to go everytime.

Standing. The daycare confused him by trying to get him to sit while we were standing at home. Once we talked to them, life got much better. Get a stool and be there to help with his "aim" if he switches to standing.

Nolan had no interest in sitting because "big boys don't sit on the potty", so he trained standing up. The times that Liam has used it, he sits down.

Right now Trevor is sitting down to pee. We just started last week with him. But after a awhile I'll have him learn to stand.

We started out sitting and teaching them how to point down so it doesn't squirt out that crack between the seat and the bowl. As soon as they are tall enough to not need a stool, they go standing up. That was just over 4 for my oldest because the toilets in that house were built for giants, I swear. The ones here are lower so Erick (the most recent to train last spring) started going standing within a month or so of training.

My son sat for a long time, mostly because he is really short for his age. He only started standing about 1 year ago (he is 6 now) because he could actually hit the toilet.

Jet sits and Troy stands. My oldest son sat backwards on the toilet. We have the Peter Potty urinal and it's great. Troy just recently became tall enough to stand using the regular toilet.

We also started out sitting first, but quickly changed to standing. Our DS caught on really quickly with both methods, but prefers standing. We have him stand on the actual toilet seat (if a regular sized toilet) if a stool is not available. Otherwise, we have the little potty and he'll stand on the floor and use that one. I was also concerned that it would be confusing standing sometimes and sitting others, but he has adjusted well. He's even surprised my DH with his aim. My DH says he's got better aim than a lot of adults! ;)

Not to change the thread slightly, but if they stand to pee, how do you know to make them sit for pooping if they don't tell you they need to poop? Hope that makes sense.

I taught them to sit and point down (and yes, that helps with pooping since they sometimes don't realize they need to poop until they're sitting). The figured out standing on their own. They are now willing and able to do both.
