Am I creating a terrible habit? I have been letting my girls have their bottles in their cribs, and it has really helped them fall asleep. Right now neither one of them has any teeth, so my only real concern is that I am creating a monster. I know that once their teeth come in it has to stop. Does anyone else give their babies bottles in bed?

I never allowed my boys to have their bottles in bed. I learned from a friends experience that it was extremely difficult to break and hard for them to fall asleep wothout them. And as you said, that would have to stop when they get teeth.

I would reccomend stopping, but its up to you!! Good luck!

at that age, we were desperate to get the girls to bed at night. so we did allow them bottles at night. they didn't have any teeth yet at that point either though. however, once they turned a year old and transitioned to sippies, we would allow water in sippies only. then we were eventually were able to taper off. but once they've got teeth...i would try to stay away from milk in bed.

well....I wouldn't allow it and here are the reasons why.

    1. the teeth are right below the gumlines and that can cause damage to them even before they suface.
    2. It can cause ear infections, the ear canal is connected and any milk that they fail to swallow can drain into the ear.
    3. What happens to the rest of the bottle? could they get ahold of it after it is spoiled?
    4. Breaking the habit.

When our girls were younger, we sometimes gave them their bottles while they were in bed (with us holding it), but we never left ii in the bed for them. That's probably not much better, since the milk can still sit on the gums/teeth, but sometimes you do what gets you through bedtime.

Oh I know its so wrong but I do it to. I'm a frigging dental assistant and I never thought I would let my kids have a bottle in bed and look at me now. I know it has to stop...............but sometimes its just so easy. Mine don't have any teeth yet either.

We don't. We just hold them in our arms to let them drink until they fall alseep and then put them in their beds. Seems to be a happy medium but when we do transition to sippy cups this will be the last bottle we break free from. HTH

We do bottles at night in bed, we will eventaully break them by 1. (Well thats what we did with DS and it worked fine.) Try subing water if you are worried about teeth and decay..

Sippy cups to bed are just as bad too, depending what is in them.. Basically you dont want that beverage sitting on their teeth all night.. It would be just like eating a cookie and going to bed with it all still on your teeth.

We let them have the bottles in the crib. As a previous poster said, sometimes you are just desperate to get them to sleep. This was the thing that comforted them, so I was willing to sacrifice teeth if it meant us getting even a little sleep. Sometimes you just have to deal with the immediate situation and worry about the consequences later. We did eventually transition to water and sippy cups. The good news is that their teeth are perfect.

I didnt. I did not want to break the habit plus its not good for the teeth. If I was by myself I would just double feed them in the bouncies until they nodded off and then transferred them to the crib.
