Is it bad to give your 6month old a bottle in bed at night - i.e. will I be starting a bad habit?

I have always heard not to let your child take a bottle to bed. It is not good for their teeth and I think they will start to think they need that bottle. I never have with any of my 3.

Occasionally I will give an oz or two in the crib if one wakes up and just needs a little to tie them over until morning, but it's not a nightly thing, I would think that that could be setting up an undesirable habit. And ditto on what the pp said about teeth, I have read that a bunch.

I don't know if this is true either, but my mil says that if a baby lays flat & sucks, that it causes ear infections... [IMG]
Don't know, I think she also has a voodoo doll too [IMG]

I wouldn't give them anything to drink while they are laying in bed. It will set a bad habit, letting them think they will have that to soothe themselves to sleep. Personally, I do allow mine to hold ther bottles, laying down on the couch, since they are learing to hold it and its easier to hold it when they are laying flat. Sometimes they will get ear infections, but my oldest was not prown to them so I am not too worried.

Dont do it. I am guilty of doing this and now I'm paying the price. My DD will not sleep thru she wakes at least once or twice a night for a bottle and will not go back to sleep without it. Belive me the other night I was trying to break the habit and she whimpered for two and a half hours before she finally went back to sleep and then woke up two hours later, I had had enough I gave in again. I need sleep too.

It can happen from the milk dribbling down their cheeks & pooling in the ears. Which is why they also say not to prop bottles, either.

I would think it could be setting up a habit for later that would be hard to break. I don't think it would hurt the teeth if they don't have any yet, but once the teeth are in it's a big no-no. I've seen pics of bottle rot & it's really gross.

One of my neices had bottle rot. Nasty!

I wouldn't do it for all the reasons previously posted, plus it would be really gross if she drank sour formula! [IMG]
