I noticed a small amount of blood in my sons diaper. I have a call in to his doctor but wondering if you ladies have any experience. He gets about half formula and half EBM. He doesnt appear to be constipated as his stools are frequent and loose. No fever and I dont think he is vomitting, although he has been spitting up more in the last week or so. How do you know if it is vomit or spit up?

I asked the exact same question about vomit versus spit up and the answer that made the most sense to me is that when a baby vomits their stomache muscles contract and they heave, like when an adult vomits. When a baby spits up there is no heaving, it just comes up.

I don't know what the blood in the stool could be, I hope your doctor calls back soon

Blood or mucous in the stool can be an indicator of a milk protein allergy. Derek has small traces of blood in his stool and was thought to have the allergy. We had to switch him to Alimentum to eliminate as much of the dairy as we could. Can you eliminate dairy from your diet? Definitely warrants a call to the Ped. Let us know what he or she says.

I would definitely call your pedi about this! Good luck and let us know how you make out!

Thanks ladies, ped said to go to the ER since he was a preemie and it was the weekend. Turns out it is a fisher so nothing serious  Although I am not sure what is causing him to strain so much. We have a apt with his ped next week so I will discuss it further then.

The ER doc said that vomit would have a yellow tint to it as it would have bile (sp) in it.

A fissure? I don't mean to correct you, but sometimes when I read others posts I want to know more about what they are talking about, so I google it.
I hope your little guy gets to feeling better soon.
