Blisters under the diaper?

Anyone had a toddler get round, wet blisters under the diaper? Amy has them all over the top of the pubic area, especially in the creases between pelvis & thighs. (But not actually on her genitals or anywhere near her butt.) I treated it like a regular diaper rash for a few days but it's gotten slightly worse. Now she also has two cold sores on her mouth too (one in each corner).

It doesn't seem to bother her at all except when we take her diaper off, then she rubs at it. I don't think she's even aware of the ones at her mouth.

I'm taking her to the doc tomorrow, but I thought I'd post in the meantime and see if anyone had seen anything like this....?

could be a yeast infection, regular diaper rash cream won't work on that.

I agree it could be a yeast infection and I would definitely see the pedi. Sometimes it just requires a better butt paste too. Hope she is better. :hug99:

Oh no Alden. I love Triple Paste. It works great on rashes. But if it is a yeast infection that probably won't help it. Hope she feels better soon.

I, too, was thinking yeast infection. I hope that your pedi solves the mystery tomorrow. But my bet is on yeast infection.

My boys have the same thing... i think!! I have seen 3 doctors over the past 3 months and have now treated them for everything; Yeast, Bacterial infection, diaper rash, heat rash etc. Nothing seems to work. Some days it seems to be much better and then later in the day it is bad again. Like you it is now only on the pubic bone area and in the creases. The rash started on their backs and seems to want to move around their bodies.

Please post what the doctor suggests for you!

If it doesn't respond to treatment for a yeast infection, it might be the diapers themselves. Too small. Too big. Or allergy/irritation from the elastic.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. They've been using the same brand of diapers for a year, so I doubt it's an allergy, but I guess it could be from them being too small... but it's not really on any part where it would pinch. Still, I'll ask.

I've been using Lotrimin on it (what the doc said to use for a stubborn rash), and it doesn't really help. I did google some picture of yeast rash and it didn't really look like that, but it's possible.

DH was wondering if it was herpes -- which is apparently very common, and most people get their first infection in early childhood -- but it seems like genital herpes is specifically on the genitalia (not on the pubic bone area and lower abdomen), and oral herpes is in the mouth, and I couldn't find any info about oral herpes causing sores on other parts of the body. Anyway, I'll let you know what the doc says.

Ok this is gonna sound weird but it is definitely a possibility. Chicken pox. My oldest got chicken pox around 13 months. It was a very mild case and the place he mainly had them was in his diaper area and they looked like little blisters. The fact she has some around her mouth makes it a definite possibility. The only other place my son had any was several in his hair.
He didnt know he was sick. Just a thought.

It is possible to spread Herpes Type 1 to the diaper area - not necessarily just on the labia. Since she already has a fever blister, that sounds like a real possibility. It doesn't sound like a yeast infection & I wouldn't put lotrimin on it. I would put Neosporin & leave her TOTALLY out of diapers until it clears up. Make several "pallets" to go on top of her mattress so that you can change them when she wets. I am so sorry you are going through this!

I would ask your pedi to culture it. Mine got staph on their bottoms and had to take oral abx for it as well at a topical cream. I hope it clears up soon!

My son had those, and the ped. gave me a TINY tube of ointment that took them away LITERALLY overnight. It was great, and not that expensive!

Eli is fighting a rash right in the creases too! His is so raw and none of the creams are working. I was also thinking we might need to move up in diaper size.

Another thought I had is that the heat is preventing it from getting better. I'm not sure how hot it is where you are at but it's been in the 100's here with high humidity. Eventhough the boys are rarely out in it I think the heat might still be effecting it.

Jazz had staph up one leg all the way into her diaper. It looked like zits comeplete with white heads. I'd check with your pedi.

The verdict is in, and the ped says impetigo (bacterial infection). Which is one of the most common things I found in my internet searching, but hers just didn't look exactly like the pictures I found -- her blisters aren't really crusting over and turning yellow. But maybe they're just not there yet, or maybe that doesn't always happen. Anyway, if the antibiotic ointment works, I guess that's what she has. In any case, it hasn't spread any more since yesterday, so that's good.

He didn't think the blisters on her mouth were related, but I still think they are -- she's never had that before and it just seems like too much of a coincidence. He did say it was possible that she could have spread it there by touching her diaper area and then her mouth, and that if they didn't clear up on their own, we could use the antibiotic ointment there too.

And the best news is that it's not contagious once you start the ointment, so she's cleared to go back to daycare tomorrow. He also said it was pretty unlikely that she'd spread it anyway, since it's spread by direct contact, so someone would have to touch her right there (or she'd have to touch herself and then touch someone else right away, before getting her hands washed, which they are really good about).

Alden, thank goodness it is something easy to treat and not contagious. :hug99: I hope she is better soon.

Riley had the same thing - maybe not as bad but they were pretty bad and the doctor gave me a cream for it (prescribed) and they went away within days. I'll get the name of it and pm you tomorrow.

I'm glad you found out what is was and are treating it. Hopefully it will clear up soon for Amy.
