BLEEDING

Discussion in 'The First Year' started by raynebowkizzez, Oct 13, 2008.

I had my twins on Sept 17th, 2008 by c-section and I just wanted to know how long are you supposed to bleed? This was my 7th pregnancy.. all my other ones were delivered vaginal and i didnt bleed this long or this funny. You know in the beginning your blood is red then changes.. to like a dark red, maroon almost brown.. well i already had that but then it went back to red.. not bright red but redder than the dark maroon it was. Im going on 4 weeks pp and just wanted to know if anyone bled that long.. i dunno maybe since it was twins I have more stuff to bleed out. lol just taking a shot in the dark there. Also, im really unclear about what all I can be doing right n ow.. honestly i havent done much.. my hubby is very protective of me and wont let me do anything.. and i ask my doc and well she just says dont over do it.. but i dont know what that is.. come on now.. i have 6 kids well now 8 but before i had the twins there was no such thing as over do it. All I do all day and night is watch tv, take care of the twins, get on the computer. i get up to go to the bathroom, front room, sometimes to get me a lil snack from the kitchen and go sit outside for a bit but thats it.. am i under doing it? is there such a thing as that? I just get so sick of feeling this way, I just want to feel normal again or close to it, actually get in my car and so somewhere.. so my own grocery shopping, because lets face it.. the hubbys are great but they dont know squat about shopping lol. ugh.. i guess im just getting cabin fever.. but im so scared of hurting myself.. that whole.. watch out you can bust open your inside stitches speech scared the living hell out of me.. enough not to want to do anything!! UGH,, ok.. sorry.. had to vent a lil i guess.. but answers about the bleeding question would be GREATLY appreciated.

I think 4 weeks is abnormal. I bled for close to 2 weeks (very light towards the end) I did have a c-section though, but I would think that would cause more blood loss then less. I would call your doctor and demand to be checked. Better to be safe then sorry.

My bleeding lasted anywhere from 6-12 weeks pp, and would vary in color/heaviness depending on my activity level. If you are bleeding heavily, you might want to (try! ) and relax a little more and let your body heal.

I am moving this post to the FY forum, as you will get more answers there.

I bled for 7 weeks stop then start up again. I feel like I was really taking it easy too, but I guess I wasn't for what my body needed.

By the way, Congrats on your babies! I see you've just made a few posts. Welcome to TS!!!

I had a c-section exactly one week after you, and I'm going through something similar. In my case the bleeding totally stopped for almost a week and then came back worse than ever. It's been starting and stopping, heavy & light--all over the map pretty much. I went in to the OB for a check because I was scared, and was told this is normal. He said that after a c-section you can bleed for up to 6 weeks and it would be considered normal. Also he said that once you start building up your blood volume again after losing so much during the surgery, it can start the bleeding again or prolong it. And here I thought the bleeding was supposed to be lighter & shorter than a vaginal delivery. Ha!

I had my twins (vaginal delivery) Sept. 2nd and I am still bleeding. I went back to see the doctor again yesterday because of this and she examined me. Anyways, I ended up having a vaginal ultrasound and it showed that I have free fluid and blood still in my uterus. So she put me on antibiotics and I have to go back again next week. If I'm still bleeding this much, she said she will probably want to do a D&C. Yuck.

I bled for exactly 5 weeks and 6 days. At 6 weeks the bleeding finally stopped. I seriously thought it would go on forever. I noticed the more I did, the more I bled. Anytime the blood would turn back to red, I knew I had exerted myself too much, so I would try and relax more.

ETA - This was with my twins who were delivered by c-section. With DS, who was born vaginally I bled for 4 weeks.

At home I've mostly been lying or sitting down. The babies were in the NICU (one just came home 2 days ago), so I did have to go back and forth from the hospital a couple times a day, but for the first 2 wks I was having family drop me off at the front door so I wouldn't have to walk too much. I did get more rest at night this way, I'm sure. I don't think I'm doing very much, really.

Oh--I forgot to mention, the OB also said that with a c-section you're at less risk for having something serious cause the bleeding, like some placenta still left inside the uterus, because they were able to see it and make sure to remove it all. It made me feel a little better, at least!

I bled for close to 9 weeks after my c-section. Was told it was "normal" and they never did find anything wrong with me.

I think I bled for a good 8 weeks but I am not sure, it was a long time though. I felt like my body was saying flush it all out! As far as over/under doing it. Moving is good so you can work through the pain/soreness but I don't think running and lifting heavy things is the way to go. Do as much as you want I am sure your body will tell you when to stop.

I had a c/s both times. With the twins, I bled for about 4-6 weeks and every time I did something more than I was supposed to, I did have more red bleeding.

With my singleton, I bled for about 3 weeks and then it was gone.

To add a different spin to the discussion, I urge you to PLEASE be vigilant about how much you are bleeding. If you are bleeding through a pad an hour, call your doc or go to the ER. I started bleeding heavily at 4 weeks post delivery after a vaginal birth and ended up in the ER. They put me on meds to control the bleeding and my doctor said I probably got my period. YEAH RIGHT! Two weeks later, they did an ultrasound (because I was still bleeding) and they saw I still had retained product. They did a D&C which appeared to work until 2 days later I started bleeding like a gun shot victim and ended up delivering the rest of the placenta in the ER. My point is not to scare you but to listen to your body. I had chills, fever, extreme fatigue and achiness. I knew something wasn't right but I figured the doctor knew what she was doing. I was wrong and should have pushed for a D&C at week 4.

I bled for about 4 weeks - stopped for a few days and then went right into my first AF - so if you aren't bf'ing you may be experiencing your first PP AF as well....

I bleed very light for about 2 wks I also had c/s with triplets (the doc vaccumed out my uterus to help with bleedind) I did also loose one of them and had losts of blood. With my singleton c/s I bled for about 5 wks.

  23. Again thank you all so much for the responses.. Im thankful I have a docs appointment today. Yesterday my bleeding slowed to almost a stop but then i felt something down there and went to check and I was bleeding again but passed some weird discharge. I know it was a clot, this thing was a lil fleshy and really gooey.. not to totally disgust any of you. and there wasnt too much of it like a very small button size. that happened twice and those were the only 2 times I bled yesterday. So hopefully when I ask my doc about it she wont tell me the same thing she always does.. this is normal and thats it, no further explaination. but ah.. Again thank everyone.

I bled for 4 weeks straight then stopped for about one. I bled for another 2 weeks after that. I had some spotting last week for 2 days but nothing otherwise. Think it is done now.
    Hang tough chica!
