    Hi ladies.

Today we took our boys to the zoo. It was cooler outside but not freezing or anything. Anyways, we were letting our boys walk/run around a bit and as most 19 month olds do they just wanted to run in the opposite direction of where we were going. So anyways, my son Cohen was crying and we were just steering him in the direction we needed him to go and he started crying really hard. We settled him down and got him back in the wagon and he was fine. A minute later I noticed a drop of blood coming out of his nose. He didn't bang his head or anything. Has anyone else's child ever had a bloody nose from seemingly nothing? I mean it wasn't coming out real fast or anything, it was a drip and it stopped pretty quickly.

I worry so much about my boys. It's stressful so I was just checking to see if anyone else's child has ever had one. I know that as an adult I've had a bloody nose for no apparent reason but for some reason to see my son with one it scared me.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

    Brandi

    Hi Brandi,
I'm not sure if this will help you because this isn't the exact situation that you had. But my DD has been getting nose bleeds in the middle of the night. She wakes up crying and there's blood all over her crib (sorry if that's TMI). I clean her up and she goes back to bed. I called the pedi about this and spoke to the advice nurse. She told me this can happen when the weather is dry and/or too hot. She told me to get a q-tip and put vaseline on it and then rub this in her nostrils. I have to say, her nose bleeds stopped, so I didn't actually try this. But I guess I want to tell you the nurse didn't think it was a big deal. Of course, you should call if you're worried.

    Take care,
    thea

Brandi, Olivia has had some really bad nosebleeds over the years. They started when she was a bit older than Cohen but evidently it is really common. The first time it happened we were out shopping & it was really bad, I had trouble getting it to stop & it scared me because I had never seen anything like that before. But I have to say, when I took her to the doctor she really was not at all concerned. Evidently there is a blood vessel just inside the nose that is really fragile in some people & it can rupture fairly easily (dry weather, a bump on the nose, etc) & cause a nosebleed. She did tell me that they tend to come in clusters, so if he has a few more over the next week or so, that is totally normal and is generally what will happen with Olivia. She will go a long time without one, then she will have like 4 in a week, then not have one for a long time. If you are concerned, mention it to your ped, they can generally look in there & tell you exactly where it is coming from, but in the meantime, don't let it worry you too much. :hug99:

Thank you ladies. That really put my mind at ease. I guess it's just scary to see your child bleeding when there's no apparent reason for it. I'll just wait a bit and see if he gets any more and then if he does I will call the ped's office. Thanks again.

You can also make sure he's eating foods with Vitamin K (mostly leafy greens). My girls are nose bleed prone, we've uped their vitamin K consumption (with alfalfa) and I've seen a drop in the frequency of nose bleeds in our house.

Brandi, my brother used to get bloody noses for no reason at all when he was a kid. He did out grow it.

I got tons of bloody noses as a child and I just outgrew it. Ditto the pp that if its dry put some vaseline on a q-tip and coat the inside of the nose. This worked great for my best friends daughter.
