About a month and a half ago, I noticed a little spot on one of my twins' stomach. It was right below her breast and it looked a little pinkish brown, maybe the size of a pin head. Slowly it has grown to almost the size of a pencil eraser and is a dark pinkish colour. It appears to have stopped growing - my question is - do we think this is just a birthmark? And if so, is it common for them to not appear until 4 or 5 months old? It really looks like a mole, but is dark pink instead of the ttypical brown. I am planning on showing it to the doctor at their 6 month checkup in a few weeks...but wondered if anyone had any insight on this...

    Thanks!

I don't know how birthmarks really work, but I know that my kids have birthmarks that didn't show up until they were about 18 mo old, one on Tony's leg and one on Ethan's underarm.

I don't know about them showing up later on, but do have a little experience w/them getting a little bigger. (Sorry if this will be TMI.) One of mine has the weirdest birthmark on his scrotum, was pretty small at first and gradually grew to size it is now and has stopped. The pedi said it would get a little bigger in the first couple months and should go away completely by the time he's 8! It's kinda embarrassing having to expain it to anyone we have watch the boys, and it looks painful, but doesn't really seem to bother him. If you are concerned about it, call the pedi before their appt. and see what they say. If it looks like a mole, I've always heard to watch those like changing color and size, but it could be nothing.

Lynae has a mongolian birth mark on her back. It didn't show up until she was about 8 months old. I have also found a few little birthmarks on her leg and on Lucas' leg. My brother has a port wine stain on the sole of his foot that didn't show up until he was in elementary school. It takes up the entire bottom side of his foot and spills over to the top a bit, it slowly grew over the years, but eventually stopped. Of course, or he would be one giant red spot! :fool: :fool:

This sounds just like what my little Will has. It is on the back of his leg, behind his knee. It showed up around 3 months. It is a bright redish pink. About the size of a pencil eraser. It is a little raised. My ped told me that it was in fact a birthmark. I kind of like Wills birthmark. Gives him his own thing and makes him unique. John had surgery when he was 6 weeks old. So he has a scar on his tummy. So this gives Will his little something for him.

I would point it out at your next appointment - my 10 yr old has a rare condition (that as far as conditions go if you have to have one is one of the milder ones) but it started out as a birthmark looking place on his abdomen.

I'm not trying to scare you kids do get plain and simple birthmarks come up after birth but I would make sure to point it out to your pediatrician

PM me and I will share our story

It could definitely be a birthmark. My daughter has 3 hemangiomas (birthmarks). The one on her forehead was not there at birth, but the other 2 were. Then about 2 weeks after she was born, a little red pin dot started on her forehead, and got quite over time. It stopped growing, I'd say around 9 months, and is now shrinking away.

I'd have your pedi look at it.

My oldest DD also has a birthmark that showed up shortly after birth. I remember being shocked one day that I hadn't noticed it before. Hers is on her buttcheek and was bright pink and puffy-looking - probably the size of a quarter. The doctor said it was a birthmark and it would fade. She just turned 3 and it has faded a lot. It's no longer solid, just 3-4 pink puffy spots.

It might be a hemangioma (not sure if I spelled that right but I think it's close). Our little one has one on her arm. It started as a pin head size pink mark, grew to a little larger than an eraser in about 3 weeks, and then stopped. She was maybe 3 months old when it happened. Her cousin had one that was the size of a half dollar on her forehead that was gone by the time she was 3 years. It's fairly common, supposedly. They are 11 months old now, and it has already started to lessen both in color and size. If that's what it is, supposedly they are left over, unneeded, capillaries from development. They typically go away on their own by the time they are 6 or 7 years. Definitely tell your ped. but hopefully that's all it is.

I have too much melanin in my skin and am constantly collecting birthmarks. I have a very prevalent one on my forehead(birth), an upside down heart on the back of my left arm(not sure), I used to have a white thumb size one on my thigh but after I got pregnant it went away, and I have a splash across my breasts(teens). The girls seem to have the same problem. Jessy has her first appearing (about 3 or 4 months old) a heart on the inside of her left wrist, a white spot next to her belly button(about 12 or 13 months), a spot on her forehead{almost small enough to be a freckle but they are too dark complected}(19 months). Jazzy has a spot on her hip(3-4 months), a splash next to her belly button which is dark(12-13 months), and a splash on her left arm(20 months). I would talk to you pedi about it but almost all birthmarks form after the baby is born.

My oldest has a hemangioma (but they're usually very red). My boy has something that looks more like a small cluster of slightly raised moles (very light brown / pinkish). My ped told me that they're called mastocytoma (it's beneign) but he's keeping an eye on it, just in case.

There's pics too ... if that helps.
