Birthdays are a lot more fun when they "get it"

The anticipation, the excitement, the joy of cake... it's all so much better when they're old enough to really know what's going on. They keep singing, "Happy birthday for you, happy birthday for you."

I'm proud of how my "cake masterpiece" came out. It took me about 3 hours to frost & decorate last night (plus the time yesterday spent baking and making a few sugar cookie parts for a 3-D effect). Their reactions made it all worth the trouble, though. They couldn't leave the cake alone and went on and on about it.

Here is what Daddy picked out for their birthday present. They love it!

Such a fun day... and now I can concentrate on Halloween.

Awww!!! Looks like they love their b-day present. And I'm having mega cake-envy! How did you make the balloons? Just half pans of the mini-round cakes? So impressive!

The balloons were baked in stoneware cereal bowls  Initially, I was going to do just one big balloon... a regular round cake... but then I looked at the cereal bowls and thought it would be more fun if they had their "own" cakes like at their first birthday and the cereal bowls looked like they'd make a nice shape. They came out like little UFOs and I think you could make a big UFO cake with a large Pyrex mixing bowl (something to remember for a future birthday). We put the candles on the balloons and then let each boy pick up his balloon and put it on his plate. It was hilarious! They didn't actually eat much cake (too full after the giant sandwich) so no worries about them overdoing it but there is something cute about giving a small child a "big cake" all their own.

OH, and I totally cheated on the characters. I printed out coloring pages from the Internet and then cut them out, laid the paper on the frosted cake, and traced around it with a toothpick. That way I could get everything proportioned and arranged without having to be too artistic. I highly recommend this trick.

That cake is gorgeous, wow! Nice job Debi! :)

I totally KWYM about them "getting it." Amy & Sarah are soooo excited for their 3rd birthday even if it isn't for 2 months. A lot of their friends at school are turning 3 right now (they have a big cluster of September birthdays), which just helps build the excitement.

    Have fun planning for Halloween!

 The cakes turned out fantastic. It looks like the boys wasted no time getting acquainted with their new jungle gym rodeo! Remind me again which one is your teethy-grinner/cheesy smiler? They look so big and grown up. Glad it was a great time.

We pulled out our Halloween decorations today and the boys tried on their costumes. They 'get it' this year (although aren't entirely convinced that monsters and witches are 'fun') and it was sooo much fun making scarecrows and putting out decorations with them.

Trent's my cheesy grinner and Trevor is my model poser. I missed the photo but they also rode their horse together with Trevor in the saddle and Trent on his belly in the ring.
