I finally have a moment to sit down and write out Andy and Sam's birth story (though it may take several small instances to finish it!).

So... I was scheduled for a C-section on August 13th at 9:15. I figured that I wouldn't get an iota of sleep the night before but was pleasantly surprised. We had to be at the hospital at 7:00 am. We got there and were sent right into triage where I was strapped up with a contraction monitor and the two baby monitors. I got my IV line put in and they gave me two drugs through that - one was an anti-nausea drug and the other an antacid so that I would be less likely to be sick during the surgery. Then I had to drink some NASTY green fluid that I'm not sure what was for. Note for the gals going for a C-section: when they give you that stuff, drink it like a shot (it's both sour and salty - very gross). They also put compression hose on my legs. As it turned out, the person scheduled ahead of me went in early but we somehow ended up 15 minutes late. At about 9:20, I had to get up and walk to the FREEZING COLD operating room. Once there, the anesthesiologist put in the spinal - not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be!! In fact, I think the worst thing there was the shivering from a combination of cold and anesthesia. They laid me on the table and put some more compression things on my legs that actually filled uo with air - didn't tie my arms - and put up the drape. I did feel some tugging at my belly and the next thing I knew, I heard Baby A howling. They rushed him off to the adjoining room and the Dr. said that B had flipped, so they manually turned him and pulled him out just one minute later. He didn't cry right away which freaked me out, but he made up for it! After they rushed him off, Steuart followed and cut the cords.

Once both babies were checked over thoroughly (9 on APGARs for both of them!), they brought both babies over to me before moving on to recovery. I got my tubes tied while I was open, but it didn't take all that long. I followed to the recovery room shortly. I was in the operating room for no more than 45 minutes tops. Once in recovery, they put a warm air blanket on me (heaven) and monitored us. Another set of twins moved in to the recovery space next to me about 15 minutes after I got there. I did barf once in recovery - they weren't quick enough with the anti-nausea medication (all that nasty green stuff tastes just as bad coming back up as it did going down). We were then moved up to our room (babies roomed in with us our whole stay - but it wasn't all that bad - at least I didn't think so).

I had to keep the compression things on my legs until I stood up about 12 hours post-surgery. The compression hose stayed on for the first couple of days (until I was up and moving about more regularly).

I was really worried about the recovery, but really it's been much better than I expected. I have had virtually no bleeding (even the doctor commented that there was hardly any blood during the surgery) - certainly none of the monstrous clots I've heard about! The worst by far was the swelling! HOLY COW! I swear everything below my incision was swollen to 3 times its normal size. That took a little less than a week to go down. I've also been luck in that I've already lost all but 7 pounds of the weight I gained (yee haw!). I agree with what others have said - stay ahead of the pain - mine was never bad. I took the motrin every time they offered it and added percocet maybe 2 times per day, sometimes less. I took percocet all of twice after coming home (don't like to be constipated).

The babies decided they didn't like getting their temperatures taken (armpits) or blood tests (would cry every time someone pulled out a foot). They are settling in quite nicely at home - only 3 days in the hospital - eat every 2-3 hours but aren't very fussy so far.

Congrats again and thanks for posting your birth story. I'm glad to read that your c-section went well.Since I threw up roght before delivering my son vaginally 3 yrs ago, I kinda expect the same with the twins' c-section. So I'll be glad if mine goes the way yours did. Enjoy your bundles!
