On May 15th, we welcomed into the world Emerson "Parks" weighing 5 lbs. 2 oz. and Samuel "Wyatt" weighing 2 lbs. 5 oz. I was 33 weeks, 3 days. They have both been on room air since birth and have had no other problems other than learning to eat. Wyatt was severe IUGR due to absent-end diastolic flow in his umbilical cord. Considering we discovered this at 21 weeks and were having grave discussions at 24 weeks about Wyatt not making it, we feel extremely blessed to have made it to 33 weeks. I spent 5 weeks back and forth from the hospital for IV fluids, steroids, and other interventions. All were in an attempt to prop up Wyatt so I could stay pregnant longer. My perinatologist pushed me to the absolute limit, but I am very thankful. Parks should be released from the NICU anytime as he is beginning to eat very well and is back up to his birth weight. Wyatt may be there for another month or so until they can improve his nutritional status and put some more weight on him.

I have very much enjoyed this forum. Although, I did not post very often, I was on here constantly reading and learning from all of your experiences.

I would especially like to thank a few women who I PM'd that have been exactly where I was during the last 10 weeks. They are: Summerfun, Annabell, Kricty, Fay, and ReallyTiredMom. Thanks so much. Your insight was invaluable!

    Regards,

    Randi

Wow.... what a great success story... Emerson's weight was awesome for 33 weeks! And how great they could keep you pg for so long and that Wyatt made it... I believe there is another woman here who is facing a similar issue with one of her twins... I'm sure she will be encouraged by your story!
    Congratulations!

Congrats! What a blessing to defy to odds and make it to 33 weeks with two healthy boys!

The other person dealing with this right now is "Buttercup1". If she doesn't reply to your story, perhaps you could PM her; you have a great story to share.

I hope you have your boys home with you soon!

Oh Randi, Congratulations! Your babies are so beautiful. You must be so relieved after living that rollercoaster. I was so excited to read your story. I've been going through the exact same situation. Our peri told us around the same time that our little one would not make it. She's still hanging in there at 27 weeks with absent diastyolic flow. Your story inspired me that maybe, just maybe we can make it past 28 weeks and hopefully to 33 as well. Congratulations again on your beautiful family! :yahoo:

I want to give you :hug99:. My girls were the same way Jessy being my itty bitty baby weighing in at 2 lbs 13oz. She spent 3 weeks in the NICU as a grower and feeder and to learn to control her body temp. She came home weighing 4lbs 4oz. She is now a healthy active 18 month old (although she does have a mild heart murmur) who is right on target developmentally(and even ahead in some areas). She does still weight 4 lbs less than her sister and is still 2 inches shorter(and was 2 inches shorter at birth). I'm happy to share a birthday with those little cuties too. Here's to Wyatt coming home in a month :drinks: By the way we had three drs tell us Jessy would never make it and if she did she would have developmental problems such as cp.

    Randi!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this has been such a draining journey for your family but you have really been SO strong through this all and I couldn't possibly be happier for you! Parks and Wyatt are both just as beautiful as their names and I can't wait to hear that everyone is home together again.

I'm really suprised at how similar they look despite the size difference!!! Do you think they look alike?

I kinda feel bad for not keeping up with your blog better this last week or so but took a peek today and I was just teary seeing the photos of your introduction to them together on the OR table!

    Anyhow...Congrats again!!!! What a blessing! :a_smil09: :a_smil09:

eta...someone mentioned how great Parks' weight is for 33 wks, and really, it is a great weight!! You definately did a wonderful job caring for those two while you carried them. Hats off to you, Mama!

    Hi,
    Congrats on your boys!
I haven't visited the Expecting board since my kiddos were born (no time but to skim FY!), but it sounds like you went through a similar experience as me. My Baby B (Annika) suffered from the same issue. They were born by semi-emergency c-s at 35 wks. Ainsley was 4lbs, Anni 3p3oz.They were in NICU for 3 wks mostly as growers and feeders.
Doing GREAT now with no problems whatsoever!

Look forward to seeing you on FY and Congrats again!

    Hello Randi!

I am just reading your birth story now! It has been a long time since I have been on the Twinstuff site - imagine that! Busy back at work and keeping up with the twins and the 4 year old!

It sounds as though you really hung in there and that everything turned out just fine. 33 weeks is GREAT! Your story is so close to mine - even the birth weights are almost identical! You'll be happy to know that Elsa, my little IUGR baby, is doing fantastic! Evi is doing great, too! They just turned 5 months old last week. They are still a little over 2 pounds apart, but the gap is closing between them! They have gone in for some additional developmental appointments at the University hospitals and both are doing the things a 4 month old (their adjusted age) would be doing - even little Elsa! Both are rolling over, laughing, sqealing...I would say that Elsa tends to do things (milestones) about 2 weeks later than Evi, but that's really the only difference. I am so glad that your little ones are well. I hope that you're getting some rest (ha!)! As far as breast feeding, mine had a little bit of trouble latching on, too. I tried those nipple shields...but they just didn't work for me. I have heard that some people have great success with them. I breastfed and supplemented for about 2 months - but I just couldn't make enough milk. I feel fortunate that they received breast milk for about 50% of the time those first 2 months.

Hang in there with everything - it was tiresome trekking to the NICU everyday and bringing Evi along - but it is just a memory now. Time sure does fly - keep us posted on your two little guys...

    Nikki
