Okay ladies, any suggestions for temporary b/c while bf?

    Warning: Possibly TMI Ahead!

DH went to get his vasectomy today, but apparently it is not 100% effective until 30 - 60 ejaculations, which at the rate we are going is about 3 years away .

Anyway, my dr. says we're safe until the girls are 6 months since I am EBF, and it will probably be a few months until DH is "safe," so there will be a month or two we will need a back up method, and I prefer not to use condoms.

I see my OB on Friday so any suggestions?

Probably - but you can't really take it for granted. Your fertility could return any time without you knowing it, because ovulation comes before your period. I've heard stories here of moms EBF twins & getting their cycles back at 2 mo pp! (NO FAIR!)

Good luck! Hope you can find a form of backup that works for you.

I really liked having an IUD. No worries whatsoever.

I would say iud. The pill will end up leaving you in an adjustment time too.

An IUD is an expensive option as a back up method - I know you are military, but a lot of military clinics have a hard time getting IUD's because of the cost. They are good for 5 years (the hormonal ones), so if you really only need it for a short time, I wouldn't get it. (and I have one, and love it, but . . . )

    Just a thought.

I'd write more, but Naomi is trying to help and it isn't going well. PM if you need more info.

I'd say an IUD also, I went back on the pill but am finding myself forgetting to take it alot. You lose track of time with two babies and trying to stay on their schedule.

Not to be too personal, but could your husband speed up that by relieving himself? Just a thought

 He will probably have to! He goes back in 6 weeks and is supposed to have "emptied the tank" at least 25 times  .... well that's about 4 times per week, and that is just NOT going to happen right now :p !

Can you use a spermicide as a back up in the mean time?

Don't count on not ovulating while breast feeding. I'm breast feeding and got my period 8 weeks after the girls were born. The funny thing is that I would go months and months without a period before they were born and that was one of the reasons we had to resort to IVF.

I am THAT girl that got her cycle at 12 wks post partum!! And I have EBF this whole time until we started solids of course! UGH... I am also on a BC pill that many women in third world countries are on (in order to keep from getting pg but keep up a milk supply) Orthro Micronor (Errin is the generic) and it was supposed to keep me from cycling at all for a year. (note above that DIDNT happen) my OB thinks I am just the most fertile person on the planet!! And warns that I still could get preggo again, if I do we have decided it was meant to be! :D But I would recommend that pill it might work for "normal" people  Just kidding!! But ask your OB.

 Twinfants are usually birthcontrol enough!

We took the risk and didn't use anything, I didn't get my period until 14 months post delivery. (my girls got three ffs a day, the rest on demand bfing.)

:rotflmbo: You've got that right! When I went to my OB for a pp checkup, she asked what I was doing for birth control. I looked at her and said, "I've got twins, remember?"

LMAO at this thread!!!! I mean what doc in his right mind would expect someone to dtd 4 times a week, period, lol!!!! Let alone with infant twins, OMG, if anyone is doing it that often they really need to share thier secret :p

Personally I would use condems because it wouldn't be all that often it would happen, lol

I was going to suggest the same thing... with a spermicide back up for any "early flyers"!

My doctor told me that the mini pill is safe to take while BFing. It was the prescription that I was given, and you take it everyday :) (I just haven't filled to prescription yet)

I'm taking the mini pill and have been for close to a month (not taking any chances here :D ). According to my dr as long as they are getting at least half breast milk then the mini pill will be effective and it's not supposed to hurt supply. So far I've seen no drop in supply. If you only need it for a couple months it seems that would be the cheapest easiest option.

Nicole, I have an IUD and it is great. No daily pill (since I would never remember) and you only have to check it once a month. Since you are bf you may not get a period for a long time. I just now got one!
