I too like you am really worried about getting pregnant again. I am currently on the minipill, but I think my hubby is going to get fixed.

A friend of mine got an IUD after she had her son, but she had to have it removed because it made her sick. Don't know anyone who has gotten pregnant though.

Try not to worry too much! The Paragard (copper) IUD is the most effective form of birth control out there - something like 99.7%. My OB says it's MORE effective than getting your tubes tied! There is a higher chance of your tubes growing back after sterilization than getting pregnant on the IUD.

Sure, you hear horror stories - but that's because horror stories are a lot more interesting than "Oh, my sister's roommate's cousin used the IUD and never got pregnant!" ;)

There is no failsafe method of birth control except abstinence, which is not really an option if you're married! But the copper IUD is the best thing going, IMO. The most effective, AND no hormones.

If you're really really worried despite having a 99.7% chance of not getting pregnant, you could pick up Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It's an awesome book that will help you learn what times of the month you're fertile and when you're not. You could always use backup birth control during your fertile times (condom in addition to IUD) if it would give you more peace of mind.

My doc said if you've had an ectopic you were at higher risk for another with any IUD.
I am going to try abstinence for a while! I dont know when I'd find time to meet anyone so it should be relatively easy. :p

I've heard that this isn't true. If you get pregnant with an IUD in place, there is a higher chance of it being ectopic than if you didn't have an IUD. BUT --- since your chances of getting pregnant at all with an IUD are so extremely low, that still translates into a lower chance of ectopic pregnancy.

So - if you have, say, a 10% chance of an ectopic pregnancy without an IUD, you still have a 0.3% chance of ANY pregnancy with an IUD. And not every IUD pregnancy will be ectopic, so that means a LESS than 0.3% chance of an ectopic with an IUD.

I have the Mirena IUC and love it. It hurts a little having it inserted but other than that it has been great. I've had it about 2 months and am still spotting. The OB said that is normal, and probably would spot up to 3 months after insertion. Also, many woman don't have any more periods at all with it, and if they do they are lighter.
