So, I am SO excited to be having my first babies and even MORE excited that I'm having twins but I want to be very cautious after I deliver and make sure I don't get pregnant again anytime soon!

So, my question is, how long after birth before I can start using birth control again and can I be on the pill while I breast feed? If not, what can I use (besides condoms?)

I'm considering an IUD, since I can BF at the same time. I know there are other options, but these are our last babies, so an IUD seems to be a good option.

I am thinking IUD also especially since the pill is what got me where I am now haha. I also heard that you cant take the pill while bf'ing.

I'm thinking of a pill...I know there is something out there called a mini pill which you can take while b/f. We did IVF to conceive and part of me doesn't want to go on bc. However, I asked the Dr and she said she's seen it ALL and if we didn't plan on having one for a bit(we'll wait 2 years) then she highly recommended it...

After my first, I breastfed and was put on the pill...I believe it was called Low Estro or something like that. It was safe to take while breastfeeding.

The pill got me here too, so I am getting the Mirena. I think it is the most effective form of birth control.

Like pp said- there are some pills you can take while breastfeeding- they are a bit lower dosed. IUD is a good option too, and you don't have to worry about the day to day pill taking. As for me I am done- no more kids, so we are thinking something a bit more permanent!

I went back on the pill at my 8 week post-partum check-up. I started the pill before getting my first period. And like clockwork, it arrived.

After my first I got the Mirena IUD. I liked it, but my husband hated it (not to be gross, but he could feel the plastic strings). After about a year it became dislodged and had to be removed anyway so I began using what my midwife called a "mini pill" since I was breastfeeding (I breastfed my daughter 2 years & 1 week). Most forms of the pill are not good to take while brestfeeding, but the mini pill or low estrogen pill is ok. Talk to your OB about options as well. They are great resources.

I just had my week check up and they won't let me go on the mini pill until 6 weeks after the birth. We conceived after being off the pill one month so I am afraid of getting pregnant so soon. I could have gotten a shot while in the hospital, but I thought we could be on the pill. HTH.

You can take the mini pill while breastfeeding. That's what I've done before and will be doing this time.

We're done having kids but didn't want to go permanent (just doesn't feel right at this point in our lives even though we're really done ... does this make sense?), so I got Mirena IUD in February. In the beginning I had spotting on and off but now I hardly have a period. Stays in for 5 years, low hormone dosage, easy and simple.

They have pills you can use while breastfeeding. Some pills do dry your milk supply but they do have some that don't. You're not suppose to have sex until after 6 weeks and my Dr. does the birth control at the 6 week appt.

Me too, I am geting the IUD put in on my 6wk checkup only because I wanted my tubes tied and they were real hesitant. the dr. asked me if one died would I have more and I couldn't answer one way or the other so she suggested that. I can have it taken out at anytime and have my tubes tied if I really want.

Two is plenty for us so we are definitely not having any more and although the dr asked a very morbid question, I thought it to be honest.

    HTH

We had friends who had triplets via IVF... they were conceived on their third IVF treatment....after years of infertility...both male and female factors... Anyway, when the docs told them to be cautious they laughed b/c it was so unlikely that they'd ever conceive on their own. Well, their triplets were born at 26 weeks...and they were still in NICU six weeks later when their little sister was conceived! :icon_eek: The triplets were just 8 months adjusted age when their sister was born! B/c of all their health/feeding issues their little sister quickly outgrew them....she's bigger than they are now at ages 3 and 4. So they got their "irish" quads!! but she rounded out the family nicely..the trips were B/B/G... (Both parents got "fixed" after baby #4 LOL! didn't want to take any more chances!!)

I took the mini-pill while I was pumping for my twins. I didn't get the script until my 8 week check-up with my OB. I had gall bladder surgery in that time too, so let's just say there was NO REASON for it anytime before that...lol! I plan on getting an IUD after this baby b/c it's probably our last.

I haven't used BC for a long time, but after my 1st son, my Dr. told me that the mini pill (I can't rememberthe name of it) is not very effective and I should probably use back up when taking it which kind of made it seem pointless to take it at all :)

I was thinking about the Mirena IUD, but a friend of mine who also has PCOS had her ovary and tube abcess because of the IUD and had to have it removed. My ovaries are in much worse shape than hers (over 30 cysts on each ovary) so I don't think i want to go there. I think we're just going to chart and use barrier methods and spermicide until we're done breastfeeding.
