Just got back from my 30-week appointment. I got a copy of my prenatal record since I'm seeing a prospective OB for a consult on Wednesday (yes, I know it's late!). Anyhow, I understand most of it except these notes:

    "BPP 8/8, AFV-No (x2)."
Anyone know what that means? This was the first time I had a BioPhysical Profile (which I assume is what the BPP stands for), and the OB said the results were good; I'm just curious to know specifically what the numbers mean. (And AFV if anyone happens to know. :))

OK, I just looked this up in Dr. Luke's When You're Expecting Twins ... book, and it says a score of 8 to 10 is normal. BUT in the two books I looked up BPP in, they both said the results are from combining info from the ultrasound with the non-stress test, but my OB said the BPP done during the ultrasound was instead of an NST. Just wondering if this is normal now? Anyone else have a BPP without an NST? Just curious.

I had a biophysical profile done but I was never given the results. I'm sorry that I don't know what the numbers mean. I think AFV might mean aminotic fluid volume? Mine was done in combination with an NST.

BPP is done during the ultrasound and the babies are watched for up to 30 minutes to see if they move and practice breathing. There may be some other things too, but I have forgotten all the details (it's been over 3 years since I've had one). The scores are out of 10, so an 8 is ok. My last BPP one baby scored a 6 and they decided to deliver them that afternoon.

    Hope this helps.

I googled AFV pregnancy and this is a site i found

    QUOTE
    Résumé / Abstract
The best method of ultrasonic mensuration to identify abnormal amniotic fluid volume (AFV) reliably in singletons and the individual sacs of diamniotic twins remains elusive. With respect to twins, localization of the dividing membrane seems to be necessary for AFV assessments of each amniotic cavity. The relationship of ultrasonic estimates, actual AFV, and pregnancy outcome remains undetermined. In the authors' opinion, the subjective assessment in twin gestation may be as accurate as semiquantitative ultrasonic estimates of AFV, similar to the situation in singleton pregnancies.

Biophysical profiles are scored on a maximum of 8 points. My wife had them done every week (32 - 36 at birth) until our girls were born rather than NST's. 2 points for breathing consistantly for 30 seconds, 2 points for 4 kicks, 2 points for 4 punches, 2 points for general wiggles, for a maximum of 8 points. Yours scored perfectly! Ours did too on all for of our tests and were born a day after the last. I don't know what the AFV-No means though.

I thought it was out of 10...blood flow through the umbilical cord included. When Claire got a 4, that was it...they were born 3hrs later. Her bloodflow was abnormal, she wasn't moving around either. The only thing she did was practice her breathing and her fluid levels were fine. I was happy I got that test that day.

I'm currently getting BPPs 3 times a week. They look at each twin as pp said to check "practicing to breathe," movement, blood flow, fluid levels and such. I've always had 8/8 for my girls. I believe that there are some who test on a 10 point scale as well (might depend on gestational age). I don't know about the other part, but your BPP number is great!

You're right on the blood flow. My mistake. Punches were included in the general wiggles portion. Ours only included 4 tests and the babies recieved either a 0 score or a 2. Our last test took only about 5 minutes for them to watch both babies (they were very cooperative and appearently ready to meet the world). Scored an 8/8 and we gave birth 18 hours later @ 36+1 weeks with no complications and the babies had 0 NICU time. Came home 4 days later.

I had BPPs done once a week from about 30 weeks on. They also used an 8 point scale.
