So I haven't paid any of my bills from the twins birth yet, just all piled neatly in the corner :) Anyways, decided today was the day! So....they totalled right at $6,000 for a cesarean, me for 5 nights, and 5-6 days of NICU for the twins!!! I thought I had pretty good insurance, and all of these bills are so confusing!

Any tips on making sure I'm not being overcharged, etc???? They make it almost impossible to understand all this stuff!

    I need help!!!!

If all of that only totalled 6,000 sounds like you got a deal!

My c-section alone was 4,000 and the boys each were 4,000 plus medications used on them and me... it was outrageous! I think I was charged 300 a night for my private room, and I was there for 4 nights.

  3. I posted this same thing in the NICU forum...I thought I had good insurance too. In fact, I just got off the phone with them because I was wondering what HASNT hit me yet. We are at 3000 so far and new ones are still coming. I have a feeling 6000 might be "normal" crazy isnt it???

$6000 total or $6000 charged to you?

If you call customer service, you can have them walk through every charge, etc. to your satisfaction. If you in any way feel you are being overcharged, call them and talk to them. Mistakes do happen, so it never hurts to give a friendly call!

Most insurance programs have a max. out of pocket amount that you have to pay for the year. Ours was $4,000 for the whole family. Our bills have been over $60,000 so far (I was in the hospital quite a bit for preterm labor), but we will not pay more than $4,000. In fact I am going to have my husband get hte big V since we have already met our out of pocket max. That way we wont have to pay anything for it :p

  6. I am so glad you posted this! I just checked my insurance and our max is 4000 as well! That is such a relief knowing there is a cap.... Thanks again!!!

I would not pay any bills until all my EOB's came in and you can cross reference bills with insurance.

EOB = Explanation of Benefits. It's a letter your insurer sends to you for each claim they receive listing whether it was covered, how much was paid, what their reduced rate is due to their contract with the provider, etc. It usually says, "This is not a bill" at the top.

I hate dealing with medical bills--ours was all screwed up with the insurance company and I didn't get them settled until the babies were 7 months old. Make sure to check your insurance statements against the hospital bills to see what you really do owe.

We have a $2000 family out-of pocket per year ... which we easily met last year. Definitely double check and question everything, especially with twins ...
