My boys turn 4 in a month :yahoo: and I want to get them new big boy bikes but im not sure what size to get. I was going to get the 12" because they are the perfect size now for them but then they will just grow out of them in a few months. But I'm not sure if they are big enough for 16". I would take them to the store to try them out but they would want to get them now. Anyone have any suggestions?

Mine got 16" bikes when they were 4. Marc still has another year to go, and Jon is ready for a new one this year--he is also 2" taller than Marc. I would go to a bike store and have the help you. They can also adjust the bikes for the proper fit.

My Dh & I discussed this before my the 3 year old's Christmas. I insisted we get the bigger 16 inch because he would grow out of the 12 inch too fast and I did not want to get a new one too soon. I am so glad we did. He really fit the 16 in on well and had no trouble with the peddles...he was 3 yr 10 month when we bought the bike and he was riding it alone without the training wheel by 4 yr 8 months.

You could check out Performance Bikes near the Costco on 38th Street and have them size your kiddos to give you a better idea since their height is going to be more of a factor than their age at this point. Sometimes they have great deals on bikes!

I agree with having them sized. We have the 12 inches, but they just turned three so hopefully we have a lot of life left in them.

Why not buy them on the day of their birthday.
Scope around the stores and find the place where you want to buy them--that has both sizes, and maybe a variety of colors. Then on their birthday make it an outing. Maybe give them a small box to open with a "coupon" for one bike or something else that represents the bike (a helmut?) inside. Then have the whole family go to the store to find the "prefect fit" for them. And let them be involved in choosing the colors.
