I need HELP!!!! We want to get the twins' bikes for their 3rd birthday. I don't know what to get. Do I get a tricycle knowing I'll eventaully (probably the next summer) need 2 more bikes...or do I get a bike with training wheels?

What did you all get for your 3 year olds? The girls are both learning how to pedal on bikes they mess around with at the sitters house, so hopeuflly they will get the hang of that.

If you have a bike you like/suggest, please send me a link to where I can see it!

My girls have trikes, but i'm hoping that a friend of mine who is known for getting big sized presents get the girls bikes with training wheels for their birthday.

We got the girls 12" bikes when they were about 3.5. They had tricycles, so they already knew how to pedal. They picked up on the bikes pretty quick. I would probably go ahead & do the bikes.

The boys were given Bikes with training wheels for their second birthday. They just started riding them a few weeks ago. I decided against the trikes b/c I didnt want to have to buy 2 more bikes a few months later.

    Good luck!

For a 3 year old I would get a 12 inch bike with training wheels. That is what we did for my oldest DD at 2.5 years old.

DS was given a trike for his 2nd birthday and has learned to pedal and steer really well. So, for his 3rd birthday we will be getting him a bike with training wheels. He picked it out--it's a 12" Spiderman bike.

Mine rode their trikes until they were 4. Then we went with 16" bikes, which Jon just upgraded to a 20". Marcus will probably get another year out of the 16" bike. While the 12" bikes are cute, I would go with a trike, it is much sturdier, and then get a bigger bike with training wheels when they are older. The bigger wheels are easier for them to ride, and Jon loves the additional power he gets out of his new bike. FWIW, we asked at the bike store how to tell when they were ready to move up, and were told to wait until the bike looked REALLY, REALLY small, and then they can handle the bigger one much easier.

We got them trikes but they hardley rode them .. then they got their bikes last year when they turned 3 and they LOVE them ! I'd go for the bikes. :)

We have trikes that they still ride - plus the trikes turn into big wheels. But last summer at Nana's house they had 12" bikes with training wheels. Honestly, those bikes terrified me. They can get going soooooo fast, but have a hard time with coordination to brake. We are sticking with their trikes/big wheels until age 6 I think.

We never had trikes. They have push cars and 12" bikes. They got the bikes for Christmas when they were 2 years 3 months old. I had a hard time finding bikes with pedal breaks instead of hand breaks, but when I did, I was very happy with them--they are so well made, all metal. So many of the trikes and bikes on the market here were mostly plasitc. I didn't want something that would end up in the landfill, these we will either sell or give away once they grow out of them. They are both really good at riding them and I think we will take the training wheels off this summer.

DS1 received a trike when he was 1.5. He rode it a little. At 2.5 we got him a 10" (on sale day after Thanksgiving) he loved that one. This Christmas at 3.5 we got him a bigger bike. He rides it just fine. The twins have access to all the bikes and they seem to want to skip the trike and go right to the bike.

We bought Ian and Tana tricycles for Christmas 2 years ago (they were almost 3) and they did not really get the hang of it until they were about 3 and a half. We plan to upgrade to bikes with training wheels this or next Christmas. :) Don't forget the head, arm, wrist, and knee gear.

I'll probably wait until next summer when they are 4 1/2 to get bikes. They love their trikes for now, and have only recently really gotten the hang of it - they can finally pedal and steer at the same time! My hope is to skip training wheels. I just don't like them, and have a feeling it might delay them in learning to ride without. Guess this is the way I was raised, so I'll pass it on. I feel the same way about using floaties for swimming, but the swimming class we just started really insists upon them.

We got the hang of trikes fairly early on so we got bikes for the kids right before they turned three. They are super sturdy and practically propel themselves. I feel like my kids are much safer on their bikes than trikes (harder to tip, they can use the brakes). My kids are tall for their age too and so they are more comfortable on the bikes. I suppose we could have shelled out the big bucks for good trikes that would have lasted longer, but we did not and they outgrew their tricycles.

We have the Trek Jet 12 for Ben and the Trek Mystic 12 for Hannah. My inlaws got them for us as a gift actually, but I know they are kind of pricey. BUT, we use them almost daily.

I would skip the trikes and go right to training wheels, my girls have trikes and are already over them..
