At what point did you look at your babies and see them as big kids?

We spent several days in NYC last week and went without the stroller. I really debated bringing one because we were staying on the east side (Murray Hill) and I knew we'd be walking around Rockefeller Center and Herald Square/Macys. I didn't want to deal with strollers for the subway or the crowds, but I wasn't sure if my girlies would be able to keep up with us. Well I was wrong and they did great walking everywhere and looked like such big kids!

When Alice is making fart jokes. :) Roycie is still a baby though. (His words, not mine!)

I have that revelation about once a year. The first time was when they were about 2.5 and started looking like preschoolers rather than toddlers -- plus, they started playing together and communicating with each other as independent beings, rather than just offshoots of DH and me.

Then again around 3.5 or 4, when they got SO much more independent and mature.

And recently I've started feeling like they're more or less in elementary school already (even though they won't start K till August).

Right now my realization is when they tell me to eat my lunch (for some reason it bugs them to see me not eating lunch?) and seeing them pull their pants and underpants up and down for the potty.

I notice it often now. 38 months. They close their door and play now and it just amazes me. They'll have full on conversations about things they like and dislike and how "mommy said don't do that" and I just think "WOW! They are BOYS!"

It's really crazy, but it's true.

I think for us it was when we got rid of the strollers and the potty training was officially over, which was all about the same time. That's when I started noticing that they were actually telling me their likes and dislikes, anticipating big events (going to the zoo, getting big girl beds, etc), really enjoying certain toys that were individually theirs. All that started happening around 3 or 3.5 and that's when I was like, wow, my little 5 pounders aren't little anymore. Now that we are almost five, they have times when they use such big words and talk like little adults, it's just so bitter-sweet.
