Bibs and solids

First off, I hate bibs...they are my pet peeve! I hate the sticky velcro on it that sticks to everything in my wash.

Ok, here is my question. Now that I have my guys on solids, they are going through SO many bibs a day! What bibs are good to use with solids, the cotton ones get so stained and icky. I had a couple cheap plastic ones but my guys would stick those in their mouths when I was trying to feed them! And you can't put them in the wash and they got nasty pretty quick too. I also don't want to spend a ton of $$ on bibs.

I think it's a personal preference type of thing. I like the cotton ones as I find the plastic ones the food just rolls right off them. At least the cotton usually stops it so it doesn't drip. I always put plastic ones in the washer and dryer though...it has never harmed anything yet.

I got a 10pack of the plastic backed ones at walmart for like $4. I like those because they were cheap and the plastic keeps from their cute little outfits getting all stained. The problem is like you said, they think they are crinkly toys and eat them.
I hate bibs too! I always fasten the velcro before I throw them in the wash and most of the time it stays.

I got 2 excellent bibs from Walmart last week. They're like a plastic lined canvas with a pouch at the bottom that unsnaps so the bib lies flat when you need to clean it. It also has snaps at the neck instead of the velcro and covers the babies from neck to waist. They are seriously heavy duty. Much better than the crinkly, lightweight plastic bibs. I wanted to post about them after I used them the first time (they are that good) but dh threw away the cardboard with the brand name. I'm going back to get a few more. I doubt these will wear out but I don't want to take any chances on not finding them again. I looked online but they're not listed. I'll post pics and manufacturer's info when I buy more. They were like 3.88 a piece but so worth it.

We used the Bumkins Superbibs and like them. They weren't crinkly so the kids tended to leave them alone. They also had a pocket at the bottom to catch the falling food. I just washed them off at the end of the meal with the same washcloth I had used to clean the girls. Occasionally, I'd rinse them in the sink real quick and hang to dry. They could go in the washer as well.

I'm so glad you posted this - we are having the same issues. I was tired of the terry bibs getting so nasty especially with DS2 daily dose of prunes and bought the plastic ones yesterday. Both DS had more fun eating the bibs than the food last night. Thanks for the info on the Wal-Mart bibs - I'll be looking for those soon!

If you fasten the velco before putting them in the washer you won't get the bib ball or ruined outfits.

We use the Bumpkins bibs and love them. I highly recommend them. I have two sets of them and rotate them every few days so I can wash them. I have never had a problem with the velcro on Bumpkins bibs coming undone in the wash and sticking to other stuff. I read a tip awhile back in a magazine (after we were done with cloth bibs) that recommended washing the cloth bibs in a lingerie bag to prevent the velcro from sticking to other stuff. I seems like it would work on that issue.

    We are the bib-family!

With Alice's reflux and Royce's just plain drooliness we have several bibs. We have the plain terrycloth ones for all day use, and for meal times, we get the vinyl backed bibs (cheap from walmart/target/BJ's) and just put them over the cloth ones. I tuck the bibs into the high chairs and that seems to keep the mouthing at bay. We have at least 50-60 bibs, and only wash them with the crib sheets. Alice usually goes through 6 bibs a day, Royce 2-3.

    These are my favorite:

They're expensive, though. I have spent a fortune on their bibs, but I've found them to be worth it.

For pretty much the same idea, though, I would buy a bunch of cheap terrycloth hand towels, and just pin them around the neck with a clothespin....I find that covering the entire front of the baby with something works best!

I love Bumkins bibs, they carry them at BRU but I think I got them cheaper on amazon.com. The sleeved ones are great for really messy food (like spaghetti).

Please forgive me for tooting my own horn - or in this case - my Mom's. :)

I completely rely on my Mom's bibs. They are velcro closures but I always close the bib before it goes in the wash and the cotton part of the tabs is wider than the velcro so if you don't line it up exactly right then it still doesn't stick. The velcro is also a bit bigger than commercial bibs so they hold even with pulling. The terry cloth side is made from towels - not the thin commercial terry so it completely soaks up everything. (My reflux babies have tested this many times.) They are also reversible. Some have pockets (which can also be reversed). The babies are using bibs that were first used by my older daughter and they have held up brilliantly to hundreds of washings.

I could go on and on but I'll spare you. :D You can see them at my website listed in my signature if you are interested. Though my site is a little out of date and I have lots more that aren't listed.

I hate bibs too. I just decided to start feeding them in their diaper only. They are much easier to wipe down that way! This has also helped with them trying to eat the bib when I'm trying to feed them.

We got those terry ones that come 8 to a pack from BRU and they seem to come real clean after the wash without having to pretreat. I also let DD eat in just a diaper as she is so messy she likes to put her hands in her mouth and then smear it on her legs...LOL

We have different bibs here but we have one I love which sounds similar to those from Walmart above. They have snaps and NOT velcro. I hate how velcro sticks to everything until when you need to use it. It is polar fleece and if I wipe it off right after they eat I can get a couple of uses out of it. Stains dont' stick. Love love the snaps.
