I was just pruscribed prozack today, but I've been hearing that it's not the safest while breastfeeding. I was wondering if anyone of you have taken it and how it went. I plan on calling my doctor back tomorrow, but I was woundering about anyone else's experances with taking it while breastfeeding. I'd be heart broken if I had to switch to formual just to take the meds to help me over the depression.

    TIA!

My understanding is that Zoloft is the safest. You will get more responses here.

I hope you feel better and it's very good that you are taking care of it. Many of us have been through it.

    Hang in there.

Zoloft is by far the safest. I had postpartum depression. Im taking zoloft and Im still nursing at 8.5 months! Originally I saw the nurse practitioner and she also prescribed me prozac. I did the same thing, called my doctor the next day and they switched me to zoloft. I felt significantly better and other than that I didnt notice any side effects. check out this site: http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/antide...-hale10-02.html

it states zoloft is the best drug choice so far for nursing moms experienceing PPD.
good luck and I hope you feel better!

Ditto pps - Zoloft is the best choice for BFing. I took it for PPD, and it helped me enormously. Also, something to be aware of is that the hormonal changes that come with weaning can cause a depression similar to PPD - so if you're not doing well, you probably don't want to add fuel to the fire!

 I hope you feel better soon.

I did a LOT of research on this and here is what I found:

There is some prozac that is released through breast milk to the baby. Less Zoloft is allowed through breastmilk. HOWEVER: We know more about what the long term effects are of babies nursing mothers and getting some breastmilk with Prozac in it. NOTHING! We know much less about the long term effects of babies getting Zoloft through breastmilk.

To cover their legal butts, drs have to recomend zoloft, but I breastfed 4 kids on prozac after DEEPLY researching these issues. They are doing great!

The end result is - the most important thing is that you are doing well emotionally. A happy mommy is the best thing for the baby. Do what works, neither has much risk at all.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I know of a few people who took prozac while nursing and their babies are fine. Zoloft is the safest but it doesnt work for everyone. I also agree with a PP that by weaning you can have a sudden drop in hormones and it can actually make the PPD worse. When you breastfeed you release oxtocin(sp?) into your body that is a natural feel good hormone. You have recieved alot of good information here already. Thank goodness for this forum. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

  8. My GP (who I completely trust to have researched this appropriately) prescribed Celexa - it's been a few weeks and I'm feeling better already. God bless, good for you for taking the step to get well.

Zoloft for me-- it made a huge difference and I only wish I had pursued it sooner. I didn't until my boys were 10 months old. Good luck to you!
