I took DD to the Dr today because she hasn't been eating very much for the past couple of weeks. At first I thought it was a formula aversion thing, but when she stopped eating as well at the breast, I got worried. She has gone from 5 oz per feeding, to 2. If I practically force her, she will take 3. And Then she promptly spits it all back up. I fed her nearly 2 hrs ago, and she's still spewing. But, despite all that, she's a hunky 14 lbs. The Dr said as long as she's gaining weight, than it's not a problem; but really, can this be normal? Her spitting up seems to be getting worse , and now she doesn't want to eat. The Dr might not be worried, but I am.

 I'm so sorry you are so worried! Jake started spitting up around 3 months adjusted and b/c he was already pretty tiny, the Dr. didn't want to wait and see if he lost weight. We added rice cereal to his bottles and it stopped the spit up immediately. It's like it needed to be just a bit thicker to keep it down. My memory is a little foggy from those days, but I'm pretty sure we did 1 tablespoon for every 2 oz, but you might want to start with 1-2 teaspoons first. (Somebody help me out with the right proportion!).

With A's reflux we used a lot of cereal in their bottles, but I think Megan's got the right proportion.

I tried cereal about a month ago, and it didn't help, but am willing to give it another shot. What speed nipple works best? I did use stage 3, but I think even with the thicker formula it was too fast. That might be why it didn't work out.

What kind of bottles? I used a size 3 Dr. Browns, with 2.5tsp per oz.

my DS was breastfed but like yours he was constatnly spitting up. We had no reflux issues, just a "laundry issue" as the doctor called it. He was a chunk too as he nearly tripled his weight by his 4 month visit. It was a phase that for us passed. Id just follow her lead, some days/weeks she may be hungrier than others.

I use born free bottles, but she has a very strong suck due to the fact that she is breast fed every other feeding. I did try the rice again and made it VERY thick. She did good with the spitting up, which is great :) , but I wonder how that much rice will be on her tummy. She doesn't seem all that bothered by the spitting up; so I guess she is a happy spitter.

Glad the cereal seemed to work for the spit up! As for being bothered by it, refusal to eat is a big sign of reflux, so if that continues, I would definitely take her back in to the ped. Hope it continues to go well.

Have you tried quitting dairy? Her not wanting to eat either BM or formula makes me wonder if that could be an issue. Hope it gets better soon :)

I hadn't thought about my diet  . Although, I have now started adding rice to all her formula bottles, and her appetite is back. My ped thinks the only issue is whether or not she's gaining weight. I swear, I think some of the moms here know more than the Dr. Since she's been having the rice, a new dilemma has popped up. She was pooping every other day or so, but since she's been eating more, and keeping most of it down, she's been pooping a lot. Even at night. Last night she woke to eat a little earlier than her usual time, but I went ahead and fed her (breast) and she pooped while she was nursing. By the time I got her changed she was thoroughly awake, and wouldn't go back to sleep. An hour later I try nursing again to see if that will help her go to sleep. Sure enough, she falls asleep at the breast, but has pooped again! So, once again; change, wide awake... long story short, I didn't sleep last night. I'm really hoping this is just a faze until she gets used to the extra food.
