Before my girls started solids I tried to plan our outings (the girls and only me) so we would go right after they ate and be home by the next bottle. They were taking bottles every 3-3.5 hours. Well I haven't gone many places since they started solids so it hasn't been an issue. I would love to go shopping tomorrow with the girls but am wondering how I will feed them while we are out. My dilemma is it is about 30 minutes away and 30 minutes back. If I am driving at that way I want to go to more than one store and spend more than an hour down there. What can I do to tide them over? I have never had to feed them by myself while out in public (we have always either been home in time or I have had someone with me to help). Unfortunately they don't hold their own bottles yet. Any suggestions? I think of finger food but all the stuff I can think of they eat right now is super messy (biter biscuits, etc). Any suggestions?

Puffs, cereal, fruit snacks, crackers, etc.

I switched my dd to a nuby cup with handles when she wouldn't hold her own bottle, and it was a life saver. Otherwise, they have these pillow like things you can stick the bottle through that rest on them so they can take their bottle without you holding it for them.

I wouldn't really worry about eating solids while your out at this age. There have been many a missed meal due to us being out and about. If they do finger food and you want to do that you could give it a shot, but if it were me I would just pack bottles and extra formula. I have fed mine alone while out in the sbs stroller and it worked well enough. I have also fed them in the car before we headed home one at a time.

Good luck and have fun shopping!

After what happened to us yesterday, I will say that skipping solids for a meal (or even two) is fine. We went to the Wisconsin State Fair. Their schedule was messed up from the time they woke up. I thought "no problem" with solids, we'll just feed them in the stroller. What a disater. :shok: First it was near their nap time. So DH who normally does not feed them is trying to feed Jake and he is having a complete meltdown. He's crying and sweet potatoes are everywhere, but DH continues to shove them in his mouth. I take his out of the stroller and I am now covered in sweet potatoes and he is just screaming bloody murder . People are looking at us like we don't know what we are doing. And to top it off, complete strangers are coming up to Jake as he is screaming and getting in his face and saying "oh what is wrong, why are you crying?" Umm, I know why he's crying, leave us alone.

So, the next time we go out for the day, I am going to bring extra bottles and leave it at that. They say that solids at this age is only practice so I would not be too worried. The day we can give them finger food will be one very happy day in our house.

    Go shopping and enjoy yourself.

I would skip the solids and pack an extra bottle. It's hard getting out of the house with all this eating!

I am thinking after reading the posts that I should just plan on making a pit stop halfway thru and feed them bottles and then just keep shopping.

That's what I end up doing. It would be great if they nap in the stroller after! Have fun!!!!

I would not worry about a missed meal at their age. I usually just stop between stores and just sit in the car and feed them bottles/breast. Have fun shopping.

When the girls were finally on 3 solids a day I remember finding it really difficult to do things because we were ALWAYS giving them a bottle, prepping something, or giving them food. But it got better when they got older because we started dropping bottles and it was easy to pack some snacks and a sippy. Of course my girls weren't on 3 solids a day until between 10 and 11 months though so YMMV. I would pack some bottles and stop to feed them if you are out and about. And if they miss a solids meal its not a big deal since all nutrition is still supposed to come from bottles at 7-8 months. GL!
