my poor babies have raw bums due to horrible diaper rash. i've used desitan, a + d, beaudreaux's butt paste, vaseline...they are all okay but not amazing...has anyone used anything that really helps? additionally i'm letting them "air out" often and change them frequently... i feel so badly for them...thanks...

The boys are prone to nasty diaper rash. It's usually pretty horrible. The only thing that truly works is changing them frequently, using unscented wipes and putting a mix of Desitin (the original, not the creamy) and Aquafor on their bottoms. It usually clears up within a day or so.

For the bad rashes, we used a thin layer of Lotrimin (or generic clotrimazole) covered with Aquaphor. Even if it's not obviously yeast, somehow the Lotrimin seemed to help.

Some other things that can supposedly help the pain (besides letting them air out) are:
    - using soft washcloths wet with warm water instead of wipes (if you need more cleaning power, use Cetaphil cleanser) and don't rub any more than necessary
    - warm soak (10 minutes once or twice a day) with Domeboro solution -- an over-the-counter astringent powder

The ped recommended all these things, and said if a rash didn't get noticeably better in 48 hours with this treatment, we should bring them in.

Triple Paste! You can find it at Target in either a big tub or a small tube. Not cheap, but it's the best thing I've found.

I like Flander's cream. You can get it most anywhere, but you have to ask at the pharmacy counter.

Is it a yeast rash, or just normal diaper rash? If it's yeast, then there's a RX cream that's amazing (and expensive) called Vusion.

    Hope they get better soon!

    Ditto!

Also a bath seems to help, let them soak in the tub and air dry.

You can put OTC hydrocortisone cream or ointment on their bottoms, then cover it with a layer of desitin. The cortisone really helps with the pain and redness. If it looks yeasty (raised with lots of individuals spots) then you'll want to put some lotrimin on it too.

I third the recommendation of Triple Paste, it works well for us. Good luck!

clotrimazole is amazing and it will be gone in no time at all. when the girls had their yeast infection from a bad diaper rash we used it and it cleared up in less than a day. it was truly amazing! now we use johnson's baby powder(cornstarch really) with zinc and they haven't had one since. we swear by it and it isn't gooey like all that paste stuff. i couldn't stand sticking my hands in that stuff, so the powder has worked well for us. i haven't seen it sold anywhere but at walgreens in the baby section. the clotrimazole is sold in the foot care section. oh and just wanted to add that sensitive, unscented wipes help tons too. GL!!

Aquaphor is the only thing I have ever found that really works. The boys haven't ever had a really really bad rash before b/c as soon as it starts getting red I put some on and it's gone the same day or the next day.
    Good luck :)

One of my DDs got the worst case of raw butt (pedi's words)--we used aquaphor caked on like frosting and plain water with paper towels. Within 24 hours it was much better. We use triple paste normally, but when her diaper rash got so bad aquaphor was the only thing that helped.

Ok so summing up what we do and others have said :
    soak in the warm bathtub
air dry and dry thoroughly before putting a diaper on
using some sort of butt "paste" in a super thick layer every diaper change
using regular washcloths and warm water --- we use homemade wipes (flannel recieving blankets cut in squares) I fill my wipe warmer with them and add a cup of water

last thing, hows their diet? we lay off the fruit & dairy until butts are better.

My mom told me to soak them in Dreft powder. I think someone here on TS mentioned it's the baking soda that neutralizes. I usually only put in a half scoop, let them soak for about 10 minutes and it clears within a day or two.
Plus adding the barrier creams when they are in their diapers.

A few months ago DS started getting terrible diaper rash, to the point it turned into open sores!! He would get it on and off for months, it was terrible - and I did everything - diaper-free time, wash clothes, changed diaper brands, every type of diaper creme possible, eventually i used a cortizone cream from the doctor and an anti-fungal cream and these helped (it was just one cream with both of these mixed in). But, in the end I finally figured out what was causing it - it was diarrhea, and when he got diarrhea he got awful diaper rash (and I used to change him immediately when he pooped), the cause of the diarrhea was milk!! He can have yogurt, cheese, but any straight cow's milk and he gets diaper rash like crazy. So, i have cut out regular milk (only use it baked into stuff, or for straight drinking he drinks camel or goat's milk) and he hasn't had a flare up since! So, you may want to look at his diet...I believe I have no diagnosed my son as being lactose intolerant as a result of diaper rash!

    Good luck

im a little old fashion. try some corn starch. its a very good drying agent and your not putting something moist like cream on a rash to dry it. you can get a box for like 39 cent. works wonders.

I think it depends what stage the rash is in. My pedi told me that once it gets to the raw, open sore stage that in order to heal it needs a protective environment which is what the aquaphor does. I think if it's just at the rash stage, corn starch might work. We had tried cornstarch at the "raw" stage before we saw our pedi and it didn't help.
