When is the best time to get a professional photographer to take pics? When they are tiny, smiling, lifting head, sitting up etc.

    TIA

Ours sat up at the end of 7 months and that is when I think they took the best pics. Great smiles, chubbish looking, and sitting independently. At 3 months we had them done and they were cute, but not as animated. And we also did them at one year and they were crawling everywhere so it was hard to get them to sit still at the same time.

I don't think there is any one "best" age. However, I can say that I love photographing tiny sleepy babies--between a week and a month old. And I also love photographing older babies who are sitting, smiling, etc.

Photographing a baby on the move is difficult, but fun and funny. :) When I photographed Becca34's kids, they were super active, but so much fun, and my favorite photos of them were the ones where they were interacting with each other, which younger babies don't do as much of.

Anyway, it depends mostly, I would say, on the types of photos you want. :)

Yep, the age and stage that you want to capture through professional pics is how I would vote. We had professional pics taken at 1 week, 3 mo., 6 mo., 9mo. We also plan on taking 1 yr. and 18 mo. photos, with yearly pics after that.

I have done and will do mine the same way sweetgirl has. They change so fast that I love having the pictures to look back on.
I was going to have the photographer from our wedding do pictures of all three of my kids but with the cost and how fast this year has gone by I have never got that done.

well, we had them done at 5 weeks, 4 months and 8 months and will have them at 12 months. 5 weeks was great because all they did was lay there and sleep so no open eyes or anything like that. 4 months was really good, they were more alert obviously but still could not really move so getting them was easy and they were in a fairly good mood. 8 months did NOT go well, especially since DH forgot to give them their bottles beforehand so they were SUPER grumpy and would NOT sit still. They are crying in most of the pictures. I'm hoping 12 months will be perfect! We will see...

Up until my boys were a year old, I did all of their "# month" pictures myself. I put a sheet up over the fireplace opening, lay another sheet down over some boppies and snapped until my heart's content. That way I could plan what time of day it happened, get them at their best. It was when they started to move quickly, that I went to the professionals for help. That way your are getting your money's worth... If you are concerned about the quality of the print, you can alway bring your digital pictures to a photo center to have them printed on high quality photo paper.

The professional photographer (specializes in babies) that I used will not even take babies pictures in the three month range. I questioned that and she said it is just sooo hard to get great photo's at that age because nothing will hold their attention, wobbly heads, fussy, etc. We ended up trusting her and booked her for 3 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year photos. (Our 6 months are coming up in October- I can't wait!) So... at three months old I took the girls to a (relatively inexpensive) chain for some pics, and let me tell you... she was right! The pictures are not bad, per se, they just aren't great. And considering how much she charges, I'm VERY glad that I chose to use her at the ages I did.

I did 5 1/2 months, and I love them. I think once they hold their head well, it's fine, they can just put stuff behind them to pretend that they are sitting etc. I'll have more done at 12 months, would do 9 months but it's too expensive!

I did my boys at 3 months, 5.5 months, 8.5 months and 12 months. Our 8.5 month pics turned out the best of both boys -- when they could sit up and ham for the camera but before they were really mobile. It gets REALLY HARD once they are mobile! Mine just turned 3 and I'm starting to get some good pics again. Between 1 and 3 were not so good...

We had our first good ones when they were just starting to get up on their knees (7 months). They turned out great!! Plus, the girls were able to smile and show off their new talent. I am so glad we had them done at that age.

I would say either tiny or right after they learn to sit up well but aren't crawling yet.
