Although I am aware of the risk of SIDS and babies sleeping on their bellies...I am still curious how babies are sleeping...back or belly?

Before they could roll they slept on their backs or side (with rolled up blankets propping them so they couldn't inadvertantly roll onto their belly). Ever since they can roll, they sleep on the bellies or sides. I always lay them down on their backs and they flip immediately... You know my kiddos are super tired when they are sprawled out on their backs sleeping.

DD back or side. DS always on belly, the only way he would ever sleep including when swaddled.
Older DS side and then belly when he could roll.

Cody has always been on his back. Just this month he started to sleep on his side or tummy.

I always put mine down on their backs. It wasn't until they could roll over on their own that I let them sleep on their bellies. Probably about 6 months. But even to this day, I still always put them down on their backs. They never stay that way.

mine became belly sleepers at 3 months, it was just way more comfortable for them, now DD will sometimes flip onto her back at night and cry, if it goes on more than 5 minutes I will go flip her back over, but oftentimes she falls back to sleep on her back. She has recently relearned (she did it when she was little and then forgot how) to roll back to belly, so hopefully she will be able to flip herself over at night.

Mine slept on their backs for months and then we switched to side sleeping because they developed plagio. Now they prefer to sleep on their tummies. If we're blessed with another baby I'll do tummy sleeping from the beginning. Both of my boys were in helmets due to plagio. There are lots of contributing factors when it comes to SIDS and back sleeping is not such a worry to me any more. Plagio has been a big worry!

Bellies since one month or so. Now one rolls on his side. I was a newborn nurse for 6 years and I still figure that the sleep I got was worth it!

    Wow, so many belly sleepers!

Mine are on their backs. Still swaddled. And they have always hated tummy time, only recently will they even tolerate a few minutes of it, so I don't envision them wanting to sleep on their bellys any time soon.

My sister's baby (two weeks older than mine) will only sleep on her tummy. My poor sis was getting no sleep (baby waking every hour), until she put her on her belly to sleep, and now she sleeps great.

I always put the girls down on their back. It was safer that way and I never tried them on their belly to see if they'd sleep better. They didn't turn into belly sleepers until over a year old.

I also put Dax down on his back to sleep but her started turning himself to his belly at about 6 months old. Since he's so mobile and I'm not really worried about SIDS anymore, I now help him turn onto his belly when I put him down to bed. I wouldn't have done this before 6 months old though.

how funny ... so many belly sleepers! mine sleep on their backs and HATE being on their tummies ... they won't (and never would even when teeny things) sleep lying on my chest, on their bellies ... they just hate being on the belly ... for play or sleep. I used to ask my sister how in the world she got her babies to sleep .. b/c mine would only sleep while held for what seemed like FOREVER ... she said putting them on their tummies ... so I wanted them to sleep on the tummy (even our Ped confessed that her 5 month old slept on her tummy =) but they never would. They like to sleep on their side now ... it is so funny b/c they start out on the side and then as they get deeper asleep the body rolls on the back but the head stays like they are on the side and I am like ... HOW is that comfortable! I have a pic of Hannah doing it on our blog ... www.meredith-hannah.blogspot.com

All belly all the time! At first I was really freaked out about letting them sleep in their tummies, but as soon as they could turn their head from side to side and pick it up I started putting them on their stomachs. After about a month of constantly checking on them to make sure they weren't suffocating, I got smart and got a motion sensor crib monitor. I was finally able to sleep in my own room instead of next door to them! I swear, when babies start sleeping through the night, I think parents need sleep training!

That doesnt look comfortable- you are right! I love your pictures. Funny I see all the same type of "equipment" at your house for entertaining the babies! :)

I started tummy sleeping mine at around 3 months, they had really good head control and slept way better that way. As soon as they were able to roll back and forth they slept on their tummy. Every once in a while Jack will sleep on his back for a little while but as soon as he realizes it he rolls back to his tummy. I think you just have to do what you are comfortable with.
