bedwetting after a year of no problems

Clarissa has been out of pullups for about a year, and has had very few accidents in that time - maybe once/month. All of a sudden, she's wetting the bed almost every night (6 out of the last 10 nights). I'm getting cranky about being woken up in the middle of the night to deal with it, as is she. She sleeps deeply and just doesn't wake up when she needs to go. I just have no idea why it has become a problem all of a sudden, when for the past year she's been able to make it until morning.

She drinks very little (frequently nothing) between dinner and bedtime. I've started taking her to the bathroom just before I go to bed around 10, but she's wet again around 4-5 AM. I'm not aware of anything that could be causing her stress, she hasn't been sick, nothing out of the ordinary is going on . . .

Tonight we're going back to pullups, but I know she won't be happy about that.

I'm hoping it will just pass and we'll get back to normal. Any ideas of what might be going on or what might help?

    Thanks,

    Rachel

As this is a big change, I would recommend getting her checked for diabetes and getting her urine checked. Just make sure it's not a medical issue first.

Sounds like it might be a growing spurt.

I know it is hard, but I agree that it may be a growth spurt and she really can't help it. I think putting down some extra absorbant padding under her sheets and maybe giving her pullups that look more like underwear for bigger kids (don't they make those) so she doesn't start feeling guilty until she can get through this stage. I really think that if she's been dry for a year she truly can't help it.

I would also have her checked to rule out a physical problem first. A UTI can also cause this. If all checks out okay, then I would also go with the goodnights or something made for big kids just to try to help her through the transition and she doesn't feel like she's going backward.

My son did something similar and I had the idea to make sure he was peeing enough during the day. I bought him a watch that had an alarm that went off every 2 hours. He had to to use the restroom when the alarm went off whether or not he felt like he 'needed' to go. The result was that the bed wetting stopped almost immediately. I think he was just getting so engaged in activities and had good bladder control so he was 'holding it' without realizing he was during the day. We had also been to the doctor to rule out any medical problems, and you should do that too, just to make sure! Hopefully whatever is going on will pass quickly!
