I am not quite in the board yet, but I have a question. We are trying to decide what to get the boys for their birthday. We are considering getting them a battery operated ride-on (Jeep, atv, etc)or two. Most of them say they are for 3 years old and up, but most of the people around here tend to buy them when their kids are 2. Will they be able to ride them okay (they will be 2 in May) or should I wait for Christmas and get them something like a balance bike for now?

We are considering getting ours a jeep for their bdays in July. They will be 3. Honestly, we had talked about getting them one at Christmas, but I am glad we waited. I don't think they would have been ready for it. I don't know that they would have understood how to steer and push a pedal. Now, I think they will get. We shall see. If I were you, I would stick with the non-motorized for now. My nephew turned 3 last year and they got him a little mini atv. The twins turned 2 (they are 1 yr and 2 days apart from the nephew..so, we celebrate bdays together). My nephew was all over that present and took off. We sat the twins on it but they were clueless on what to do. Even if they can reach the pedal, they have to know how to steer or that could spell disaster.

We have a jeep handed down from my niece. Last summer when they were just over 3, they really didn't get the pedal pushing and steering. It was pretty much hit the pedal, jerk forward, and foot off the pedal.

This year I think they would get it much better. As soon as it dries out we'll pull it out.

I have seen a few smaller battery ATV's that say they are for 18 months and up. I think you push a button to go instead of pedal but I'm not sure. I thought about getting them but haven't bought anything yet. They still enjoy their cozy coupes for now but we'll probably get something else this summer.

You can get one of these for like $100. My neice got one when she was 18 mos and she rode it okay. My 2.5 yr old rode it all over the place. I got him the more expensive F-150 for Christmas, but I think the pedal was farther away or something, even though he's a big boy, in 4T - 5T and not yet 3, it seemed a little big for him. So, he still isn't into the F-150 yet, and he'll be 3 in May. I keep hoping he'll get the hang of it.

Not sure if it's a physical issue, or maturity - I think he can reach the pedal, but doesn't understand to hold it down - he wants to pop it up and down, which jerks his foot off the pedal.

    Hope that helps some!

We got the girls a smaller version (18 months and up) for Christmas right before they turned 2. They did ok, but were not real impressed. My IL's got the girls a Barbie car for their 3rd birthday and they did much better then. However, my girls are fraidy cats and do not like to try new things. Your two may do great with it.

    Good Luck!
