My girls are just over six months and we started them on solids about a week ago. They had been getting rice cereal albeit inconsistently for the last month or so. We started them with green beans and I wanted to work our way through the vegetables first but when I came home from work on Thursday, DH had given them bananas instead. Today, DD1 had a dark purple, almost black, stool and I'm hoping it's just from the new food (DD2 hasn't had a bowel movement today to compare). I cringe at the thought that she may have a GI bleed. I googled it and all I can find is that it is indicative of an iron rich diet which of course they have from their formula. Has anyone encountered this or should I call the pedi in the morning? Thanks in advance.

Bananas always gave my guys really dark brown poo that had stringy black stuff in it. The contents of your babies diapers get really interesting after they start solids, ranging from "I never fed you anything that color!" to "Wow, that raisin looks absolutely the same as it did when you ate it." to "How can you poop something that big?" to "Hey look, washable crayons dissolve and dye their poop the same color as the crayon they ate!". Her poo doesn't sound completely unusual because bananas gave my guys rancid smelling dark brownish purple poops with black stringy things. Just to be on the safe side or for your own mental health ;) you could give your doctor a call and see what he/she thinks.

I say that everyday. I ditto Jenny, I would just give the Ped a call too. I dont remember the color, but I do remember some wierd things in that department at that age.

It's probably a normal thing. Calling the dr. helps to put the mind at ease, if nothing else :) .
