I just recently started getting heartburn. It is so annoying!I always get it about an hour or two after I eat, it doesn't matter what I eat. Tums do actually help but only for about a half hour so I feel like I am eating a lot of them. Is this o.k. or is there something better I can take to prevent it more. I have my regular two week appointment at my ob friday, should I mention it to them? It is making me feel terrible. One other thing and I know this is kind of a hard question to answer but what do BH feel like? I'm not sure if I would be having them yet or if it's just stretching still. But I am starting to get slight cramping with a light backache every once in a while now. Thanks for your help

many doctors want you to limit the amount of Tums you take in a day. My dr wanted me to take zantac and said only use Tums if I needed a quick fix until the Zantac kicks in (about 20 minutes) but that he really does not like the use of Tums at all. I would definately talk to your dr about it.

my ob said it was ok to take any heartburn medication but pepto bismol. I have a couple of different things, and they all work better than tums for long term relief. Good luck!

Like heartburn I have bad reflux, and it is annoying. Ask your Dr what he prefers you to take. If he doesn't have a preference try a couple different ones and see what works for you.
Also you might try take the tums right after you eat and sit up for about 20-30 minutes after eating and see if it doesn't help.
The cramping and low back pain could just be irritable uterus, make sure you are drinking enough water and getting enough time off your feet and definitely mention it at your next appt or call if it gets worse before then.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Too much of any antiacid can cause an acid/base imbalance in the blood. This is while pregnant or not. So ask your doctor about how much is too much. As far as pepto, it contains aspirin and that is why you shouldn't take it while pregnant.

I get very bad heartburn towards the end of my pregnancies. I am expecting this one to be far worse. Staying in upright positions will help. Sleeping with your head elevated will also help reduce symptoms.

Ditto on checking w/your doctor - mine has a list of things that are approved for pg.

I also found that raising the head of my bed about six inches (my DH did it with some friends and some bricks) has made a world of difference - AND it makes it a whole lot easier to get out of bed to pee in the middle of the night, as i don't have to haul my whole weight up from a completely horizontal position.

and, as pp said - stay upright for about 30 minutes after you eat. That seems to help as well. Good luck - it's AWFUL!
