bad gas

DS seems to get really bad gas between 3-6 AM.  During the day he passes gas just fine, maybe because he's more mobile?  But by 3AM he is just a fussy squirming baby so I've been up everyday at 3 trying to get him to go back to sleep.  Sometimes the only way to keep him asleep is rocking or bouncing him, so I'm just up from 3 on.  I'm tired and cranky and wondering if there is a solution.  I give him gas drops with each feeding during the night and prop his feet up to relieve the gas pains when I lay him down (he sleeps in his bouncy).  He's breastfed so it's not a matter of switching formula.  I gave up dairy for my DD so I know it's not that.  I just can't figure out what to do to help him with this so our day doesn't start so early.  Is this a passing phase?  HELP!

Poor baby and poor Mommy! I believe you can give Mylicon 12 times a day, do you give him some more during the gassy hours of the morning? Both of my babies were very gassy the first few months. We did Mylicon in every bottle and for my son, we did gripe water (Little Tummies Gripe Water) which helped him a lot. You can also try when his legs are propped up to move them in a bicycling motion to help get some of that gas out.

I hope it clears up soon!

I'd also suggest giving more mylicon if you can.

    Poor little gassy guy!

Poor pumpkin. I wish I had some advice for you. I had gassy babies too, but between Mylicon and lots of burping they were ok.

Amanda...I know EXACTLY what you're going through. My Maddox was EXACTLY like that. It was like clockwork..every morning at 4am. I would have to rock/bounce him to get him back to sleep and when he did pass gas it sounded like it hurt so bad. We used Mylecon and Gripe Water like it was going out of style to no avail.

I recently put my children on probiotics - which is a good bacteria that all of us have in our digestive system. I don't know about you, but my boys were on alot of antibiotics when there were born and I was pumped full of them during labor. They say that antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria in the digestive system resulting in difficulty digesting foods.

I have to say...Maddox is like a different child. He sleeps straight through now..no more waking up at 4am with horrible painful gas. I am so glad probiotics were suggested to us. I couldn't imagine still going through that on a daily basis.

    Good luck!

DD used to get straight Mylicon (the hell with putting it in the bottles - that never worked!) after every bottle and before bed - it was the only way to get through the night (once she was STTN)

Where did you get the probiotics for babies? You're right, my babies and I were both chock full of antibiotics. They pumped me full of them during my pregnancy too because DD's bag of waters was exposed to the birth canal at 20 weeks. I wonder though if they get them through my breastmilk. I've been on probiotics the whole time.
    Thanks for your help!

Oh this brings back memories! My DS would wake up from 3-6 or so, moaning. I always assumed it was gas and gave him Mylecon, colicease, etc. Looking back I wonder if he was just being fussy/tired and didn't know how to get back to sleep. We sometimes had some luck with the swing. My husband could sleep through it (he wasn't crying, more whining with eyes closed off and on) but I had to go to the other room every morning to get a little more sleep. I eliminated dairy too, which didn't help. The doctor even prescribed reflux meds but I didn't think it could be that since he only moaned in the morning. ?? I don't know what to advise, but it did get better after a month or so!

I bought them in the refrigerator section of the natural foods section of my grocery store. It's in a canister (powdered form) called Nature's Way Probiotics for Children. I put a 1/2 tsp in each of their morning bottles and that is it for the day. It really has been a godsend. It does increase the amount of their bowel movements but that is normal. And you know what...I would change a poopy diaper 10 times a day knowing that it makes my boys so much more comfortable.
