My poor DS developed the worst diaper rash litterally overnight. I'm wondering if it may be something else? Niether of them have ever had a diaper rash before but poor little Jack's butt is just raw. I don't understand how that could happen that fast. DH and I were both taking care of the babies yesterday morning and he thought I changed him and I thought he changed him and DH put him in his jumperoo and when I went to change him an hour later his butt had three spots on it near the creases of his legs and butt that were litterally open sores that were swolen and red. Well I had some type of cream that the doctor gave me for what we thought might be a slight yeast infection (Jack had a red spot that he had really been grabbing at, if you know what I mean  ) and I have been using that but it almost seems to be making it worse. I have tried plain old desitin but I am really concerned it doesn't seem to be getting better. I have been changing him constantly but the spots are still oozing clear stuff. Is this a diaper rash, I am clueless, poor little guy! Any suggestions?

Yeah, that's a diaper rash. What helps is to give him a bath and let him soak for a bit. After he's out of the bath gently pat the areas dry and let his skin dry out. You can gently dab a little Lotrimin on the spots and use petroleum jelly generously, then diaper. Don't use cornstarch, baby powder or anything containing those ingredients.

Some of that stuff can dry their skin out and make it worse. I always use a mix of Aquafor and Desitin Creamy and it clears up really quickly. You just make a really thick paste and slather it on.

Poor little guy! I hope you find something that works.

A & D ointment usually did the trick for us. When it didn't I would take them to the pedi and she would always prescribe Nystatin cream, and it cleared it up in a flash!

Awww, poor guy. Definitely let it have some "air time" (no diaper on) when you can. I've heard some really good thing about Triple Paste for diaper rash, although I've never used it myself. You can get it at Wal-Mart. Hope it clears up soon.

Could he be allergic to something that he ate? When my cousin and her baby boy came to see the twins he got a horrible diaper rash, I mean it was bad. His turned out to be from the introduction to milk. I don't know just a thought. Hope it clears up fast.

We've always had really good luck with the Burt's Bee's diaper creme (which Target just started carrying). So sorry he's having such a bad time with it! I second the "air time" idea......really good for diaper rashes. If it doesn't get better, I'd call the dr.

Triple Paste works if everything else fails.

Walgreens has it, but it's fairly expensive. Costco has a larger "jar" which is more value for money, about $22 (but it's big - large peanut butter container size).

You could also create a vinegar bath for him. It's one tablespoon vinegar to one cup of water. That helps if there's any yeast in the sores. Whenever we have bad diaper rash, I do a vinegar bath followed by some naked tummy time.

I agree with pp's give him a bath and then some air time. And every time you change him make sure he is completely dry and then slather him up with some diaper cream (everyone has their own pref- we've always used california baby and love it) before putting the diaper back on. Oh and as a pp said, did you try a new food with him recently? This might cause it too. Hope your little man feels better.

My DD just had a really bad diaper rash. Our pedi told us to stop using wipes, and just use washcloth and warm water. Then make sure the area is COMPLETELY dry. Then 2X a day use Lotrimin cream (helps with yeast) and lots of Desitin.

Hers did clear up pretty quickly. Good luck!

A mix of ~equal parts of lanolin, vaseline, and zinc cream works wonders on diaper rashes! GL, hope it gets better soon.

I have aquaphor, desitin, and A&D but have been using Bordreaux's butt paste and wow does that stuff work! Smells ok too. I've been raving over that lately. Its zinc oxide like desitin but somehow seems to work better.

I second Triple Paste, it worked on the worst diaper rash for my girls. Also clean with a wash cloth to avoid alcohol in the wipes and let their bottoms air dry.

It's good to know Costco carries a big tub of it.

If it is really bad as you say it is whwn DS had a rash that was reeeally bad that cma so quickly like that. My pedi prescribed Nystatin it is just one cream i put it on twice during the night and it was...Poof! gone the next morning. That quick.

i just went through this i think that it is from teething. Beau got the worse rash. Put him down around 8 pm and he woke crying at 4 am and he was so raw that he bled when i wiped him. So i bought some pure corn starch JnJ baby powder and slathered him in a&d and then the powder and about 4 days later it got better... It was so bad that i did not wipe him i literally put him in water to wash it with my hand only. :( He screamed when i changed him... It was all teething related if you ask me. Once his teeth popped through all was well and no more middle of the night poopings. ;) Good luck!

A + D works great, you can also try cornstarch mixed with crushed oatmeal it soothes and works as a protective layer if they poop again. We use that if any of the kids get the runs and rashes and takes care of it right away. A bath with oatmeal is good too.

Triple Paste, Triple Paste and more Triple Paste.

We have used prescription stuff and everything else out there in the past 2 weeks. Jorden had HUGE OPEN sores on his bottom b/c they had Rotavirus and terrible diarrhea 10-14 times per day.

If they have open sores, put tea bags on them (steep them, let them cool and put in diaper for 45 minutes) and then slather and I mean SLATHER Triple Paste on. It is expensive, but it will last forever and it has worked 10 times over better than any other diaper paste, prescription or not, that we have tried!
