Chloe and Bryce both had a bad bout of diarrhea just over a week ago, but hers has returned slightly this week and now she has a bad diaper rash since yesterday that must burn her from the toxicity of the poop. I've been slathering her with diaper cream, which helped during the course of diarrhea previously, but she screams now after going because each time she has more icky poo, it makes the rash worse like it's burning her. I've tried giving her tepid baths, tons of diaper cream and trying to keep her very dry, but any other ideas/suggestions? She's very red all over down there and has red spots now appearing in clusters.

Yes, you do need to keep her as dry as possible. Keeping her without her diaper might be a good idea too, if at all possible. One of my girls occasionally gets very bad diaper rash, what works for us is vasaline and pure corn starch (not the J&J kind, the corn starch you would buy in the baking isle at the grocery).
I hope it clears up soon - I know how much she is suffering! :(

I would ask your pedi to call in a script for Nystatin for you. My girls had a horrible one after Rotavirus. Laney's bottom was bleeding. I spent a small fortune trying different creams when they did nothing for them. It turns out they needed an antibotic/steriod cream to get rid it. They were better in 3 days. The cream with our insurance plan cost $7.

You can also try A&D ointment (the one with the gold writing), it always clears up our diaper rashes. DD has a reaction to zinc in most diaper cremes so this is the only thing we can use.

Something that you can use when they are having "acid poops" is Mylanta. Just dab it on after cleaning the bottom. It will neutralize any leftover acid.

I second the corn starch. Sounds like she might have some yeast going on too? I would use a combo of Monistat and Baby Gold Bond with cornstarch(yellow bottle). It's medicated with cornstarch and works really well.

Sounds like a yeast infection... DO NOT under any circumstances use corn starch on a yeast infection....it will make it worse by feeding the yeast. Use a thin layer of an anti-fungal (monistat. clortrimizole sp?) and over it a layer of plain A&D it should help. GOOD LUCK! My DD gets these whenever she has loose stools

Our DD just had an awful bout of diaper rash a few weeks ago. I tried a few different creams but eventually what worked was tons of aquaphor all day and every other change I used cornstarch (like the PP mentioned). Once it got to the point where it didn't look blistery and raw anymore, I went back to the desitin and that eventually wiped it out. It took about 24 hours until DD could walk and sit comfortably and about 3 days for it to disappear completely. I hope your DD is feeling better soon!

That sure sounds like a yeast infection to me. One of mine had that and after poops the rash would get much worse. I'd try using over the counter yeast medication or go to the doctor for nystatin. These meds can take 3-4 days to work, but it's the only thing that will clear it up if it is yeast.

I used Neosporin on Lily after a really bad diaper rash (per the pedi). I also let her run around diaperless for a while, although I end up with pee on the floor that way. :(

We also use wet paper towels to wipe her. The wipes really irritate it and she screams.

I would suggest checking with your ped. It sounds like it could be yeast. If that's the case you'll need an antifungal to clear it up. Poor thing!

I second this only becaue we just went through it. Landon had a bad daiper rash and the ped. said that b/c of the openings with the rash, the yeast got in there and caused a yeast infection. he did write a perscription for nystatin and it cleared it up within a few days....

If it is just a rash, try Triple Paste it has a higher zinc oxide content than Desitin and A&D. My Lilly had tons of diaper rash related to drinking juice. Triple paste worked best for us. Mostly I would keep her without a diaper to let the area air out and eventually dry up. Other thing is to use wet cotton or washcloths instead of wipes, wiping with plain water is better, and bathe often even if only from waist down. Good luck !!!!!

Thanks so much everyone. I talked to the pedi today and he said it does sound like a yeast infection because she has the tiny, red, pinpoint dots in addition to overall redness. As a result, they recommended doing the following to get some fast relief within 24 hrs. I'll try this and let you know how it goes. If this doesn't work, I'll probably get the prescrip mentioned above.

    - Stop using diaper wipes and just wash her off with warm water/washcloth
    - Apply 2.5% hydrocortisone and Lotrimin twice a day, then on top of that, put on Triple Paste diaper cream (as well with every diaper change). Wake her up at night once to do the process and it should clear it up in 24 hours.

Well, the pedi's instructions worked like a charm and the yeast infection was 95% gone this morning! I let her "air dry" after her bath for about an hour last night, then applied each ointment and viola - she's much better today. I'll be repeating the process one more time tonight after the application this morning and hopefully, that will be the end of it completely. Thanks everyone!

My DD has really sensetive skin and will get horrible rashes if she has even a slightly wet poop. I have found out that using the wipes on when she has a rash will make her scream bloody murder!! I think the cleanser on the wipes really burns. When she has a rash I use soft paper towels or toilet paper with cool water, and she doesn't scream when I change the diaper. Also with every change, once I have watered off her tush I dry her off by dabbin gher with a burp rag, and then let her air dry for 10 minutes or so. Only after all the production to a put on the the diaper cream ( desitin is the only thing that stays on for me) and then put her diaper back on. Before I perfected my diaper rash technique, she had a couple of bouts that were so bad they bled...it was awful. Now it never progresses to that point.
