My little boy seems to have bad breath the last few days. I kept smelling a sour milk smell, thinking he needed a bath or his clothes weren't clean, or maybe it was me that smelled - but today I am realizing that it's his breath that smells like sour milk. Have you experienced this? Is it normal? My girl doesn't have this.

My twins are 6.5 weeks old and fed exclusively breast milk.

    thanks.

It might be normal if he is a mouth breather, but I'm not sure.

Does he spit up a lot? This could cause it also. Does he have any signs of reflux? I would ask the ped about it at your next visit.

Great Job on breastfeeding! It sounds like you are doing great, but just know it gets even easier and better in a couple of more months!

My sisters baby had bad breath. The culprit....reflux. She had it pretty bad. Have you noticed any other symptoms?

what are other symptoms of reflux? he has bad gas. He'll stiffen up and grunt and scream - then let out a bunch of farts and be fine.

    Hi Lisa,

    Other symptoms are:

Some symptoms of reflux or GERD include:

constant or sudden crying or colic like symptoms
    irritability and pain
poor sleep habits typically with frequent waking
arching their necks and back during or after eating
    spitting-up or vomiting
    wet burp or frequent hiccups
frequent ear infections or sinus congestion
refusing food or accepting only a few bites despite being hungry or the exact opposite requiring constant small meals or liquid
    food/oral aversions
    anemia
    excessive drooling
    running nose, sinus infections
    swallowing problems, gagging, choking
    chronic hoarse voice
frequent red, sore throat without infection present
    apnea
    chronic ear infections
respiratory problems—pneumonia, bronchitis, wheezing, asthma, night-time cough, aspiration
gagging themselves with their fingers or fist (sign of esophagitis)
poor weight gain, weight loss, failure to thrive
    erosion of dental enamel
    neck arching (Sandifer's Syndrome)
    bad breath

If they are not spitting up or throwing up which I've noticed alot of moms saying their babies do...they could have "silent" reflux like mine. They really don't spit up alot or throw up but my DD was thrashing around at almost every feeding. I thought it was gas too cuz her belly would get tight. I didn't know what it was till I went to this website: http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com then I went to my ped and she put them on pepcid and it has definetly been better.

GL and let us know what your ped says. :hug99:

I was going to say that it sounds like reflux also. I would call the ped!

Lisa, It doesn't sound like reflux. He'd be having more severe symptoms than that. But of course check with your ped.

Sounds like silent reflux to me also. Patrick had the throwing up type and Kevin had the silent type, which I thought was gas but was actually reflux. He wasn't diagnosed until about 5 months but he was better once he was on Zantac. I would call my pedi Lisa. Hope things are ok with Daniel. :hug99:

Just wanted to add my daughter has silent reflux. My twins were born 8.2 weeks early so they were in the NICU for 3 & 4 weeks. It was discovered during the sleep study. She has no symptoms other than spitting up somewhat frequently and milk pouring out of her nose and mouth on occassion. If they had not discovered it I would have no idea that was the culprit.

    Good luck

Well I talked to the nurse at the ped's office and she doesn't think it's reflux. She said if it was reflux he would be fussing, arching, etc. w/in a 1/2 hr of the feeding consistently. And he's not really doing that - it's more like after he's been asleep for an hour or so. And she didn't think the bad breath meant anything. She said we could try having him sleep sitting up in his car seat and see if that made a difference. We have our 2 month appointment in a couple of weeks, so I'll bring it up with the doc then.

Lisa, I am glad you called the pedi. I would try the car seat thing. Both of my guys slept in the car seat til about 4 months old. We out them in their cribs in their car seats. They slept very well that way. Good luck! :hug99:
