My guys are going to start preschool in September (I know, right?? How did *that* happen???), and I wanted to get them some backpacks to take to school. A lot of the ones I see online and in stores look way too big for my boys, who are not very tall and are pretty slender. I've seen other preschool-aged kids walking around with these giant packs on, making them look like they're indentured servants, bowed under the weight of their burdens. :( Then again, I don't want to get them something so small that they can't fit a full sized piece of paper in there.

Does anyone have any lightweight, non-bulky backpacks that they recommend for preschoolers? TIA! :)

I haven't traveled this road yet...but sitting in front of me is the Land's End Kids catalog! They have a backpack called boys classmate tinytake. They say for kids 3'-3'6". It can fit change of clothes, 2 folders, small book, notebook in the main compartment. There is an attachment on the outside for a lunch box. And...they are 20% off right now and cost $19.50.
    And monogramming is $6. HTH!

They are a bit more pricey, but Pottery Barn makes 4 sizes (I think) of backpacks. Mine got the small size last year and these would be good for preschool, but they also just added a preschool size. They held up great and were a great size for my Jr. K kiddos.

We bought a large sized backpack from LLBEAN for Aaron when he started K. The zipper broke and I need to call and see if they will honor their lifetime warranty. I found it on-sale for $25 and they guarantee them for life. I only wanted to shop once for a backpack so I chose LLBEAN and to pay just a bit more for the lifetime warranty and I made it big. He has grown into it after K. Going into first he will be 50+ inches and 50lbs.

We are probably getting the girls the LL Bean regular size back packs (not the junior) for the fall (pre-k).

Leighann--I just called LLBEAN to process my return and there are some discontinued colors on sale for $24.99 in the regular sized backpack.

You can't go wrong with Landsend or LL Bean. A friend bought my girls Pottery Barn backpacks two months ago. They're great quality but too bulky or my taste. I wish my girlies had Landsend backpacks instead. And yeah, they're on sale right now!

My kids have Landsend backpacks. I forget what size, but it's one of the smaller sizes. They are getting ready to use them for the 3rd year and they still seriously look like new. Sarah's is even light pink and it still looks perfect. My kids will definitely out grow them before they come close to wearing out.

I did put scotch guard over the fabric before I let them out of the house the first time, but I never re-applied it. And it's 2 years later.

I got a couple at Toys'r Us, they had smaller ones that are perfect for their size, as long as you like Cars or princesses...

I got my girls' backpacks from Potterybarn last year for Preschool. There were just the perfect size. I wasn't for sure what size to get, but after reading reviews many people had said that the pre-school size was too small, so I went with the next size up (which is small) and it was perfect. They have held up so well and we are going to be using them this year as well. Bought my son's second backpack from Land's End and those backpacks are great as well. He is extra hard on his backpacks and the last one lasted him for three years. Hoping this one lasts as long as well.
