My lower back has been hurting since last night. It's an almost constant pain. Sometimes a little stronger .... my belly doesn;t seem to be getting hard, so my question is, could I still be having contractions despite my belly? I feel like a fool for asking but I dont know what labor really feels like having delivered all my babies csection.

I don't know how far along you are? I know when I was about 2.5 mo my lower back hurt so bad I thought I was in for the worse. The nurse asured me it was ok, and it was. The babies were just making room. My back hurts a lot too. I find just a little heat for a few minutes helps a lot. I also got a better mattress pad for back support. Sorry I can't offer better.

    Yes, I did!

How far along are you? Lower back pain can be a sign of labor. I had consistent lower back pain before my twins were born and my OB told me to use a heating pad, I think she was thinking it was not labor. But looking back it had to be. You might want to call your OB.

I had this pain last night. Felt like Menstrual back pain. It would come in waves and last about 20 secs. Hurt so bad but never came around to the front in my lower belly area. It lasted about an hour and finally went away. I have been fine today though. I wonder if the babies were laying a funky way? I didn't call my OB.

Hope you can get some relief.

Hi ladies. Yes back pain is a sign of labor. My perinatologist and doc says if you have any sympotoms of preterm labor for more than an hour to call. Then they make you lay down on your left side after using the restroom, drinking 2-3 glasses of water and see if they go away. I have been getting this along with cramps and mild contractions that come and go. Today they are getting worse and the peri nurse says that it is a sign that your are doing too much (though I am just sitting in bed, using the restroom and getting up to eat) and that you need to lay down. She says it is a cause for conern if the pain is still there when I am laying down for more than an hour. As of 10/30 i was 40% effaced and that was before all the action this week! I was having back pain and cramps before and they are doing stuff to my cervix. So please call ur doc if your back pain is persisting. Now there is a difference in back pain so make sure its in the lowerback and not sharp pains. Sharp pains or pains in the top of the back would be from carrying the extra weight around or sciatic nerve pain (another joyus thing I am feeling too!!!). Hope this helps clarify.

Thanks so much for your responses! I love this board.

So I laid down most of the night and pumped myself full of water, and slowly it went away. I think maybe I was just overexserting myself.... but man I'd never felt anything like it! I'm 22 weeks btw, Maybe I should put a ticker in there lol. Thanks again so much!

Wow was that post in line with what I was experiencing last night!!! I had back pain off and on all day. it seemed to go away when i layed down until around 8:30. I had pain like never before. I had to go into l and d and be monitored for a while. I was 1cm dialated and 70% effaced! SO please call ur doc if u have pains or cramps for more than an hour. I really dont get contractions I get more cramping and back pain and it is still working my cervix. Please be mindful of your pains. u will know ur body way better than the doc.
