I have noticed a change in my babies urine. I did not think much of it at first. I had eaten a few smoked almonds the night before (which I never eat). I thought it was that. But, I asked my husband if he noticed it too. He said yes. I noticed it again this morning. That is when I have noticed it the most, in the morning after wearing the diaper for the night.

I searched on the internet and found something called maple syrup urine disease. MSUD. This is pretty alarming.

Has anyone else had this concern? I have called the doctor and am waiting to hear back.

I don't know much about MSUD, but I think it's pretty rare, and it starts in early infancy with other symptoms. It could be just the diaper's reaction to a different food that you or they ate.

are they on any new medications? some meds especially antibiotics can cause that smell. MSUD is rare and i think only occurs in neonates...I think they test for that when they are born or at their first well visit. When my girls were in the NICU they tested for different things and MSUD was one of them. I am sure it's nothing, but if you are concerned, call your pedi...he/she may just have you send off a urine sample. They can give you those urine collection bags, so you can try to collect at home so they won't have to be straight cathed. Good Luck!

I agree with pp, it sounds like the smell is from something that they ate .

I have not heard of that disease before, I hope it's just something you ate. What did the doctor's office say?

Both of my boys are on antibiotics for ear infections and also have odd smelling diapers. THe ped told me that it is most likely from the antibiotics or from something they ate but to keep an eye on it if it changes or continues after they are aff the meds.

Are you taking fenugreek for nursing?

I am not using fenugreek although that is similar to the smell, because I did use it some time ago.

The doctor said that they will put a little bag on at our next visit, next monday, and collect some urine right in the office. I wont let them use a cath anyway.

I did a search on this site for past posts about MSUD and it looks like others have had this concern. The replies were similar, that the MSUD is quite rare, appears earlier, etc..

I am now not as concerned as I was this morning but will be watching and check at next appt. I will keep you posted.
