Do you use baby powder? If so do you put some on the babies at every diaper change?

I don't use it. Never have had an issue with diaper rash. Never used it with my girls. Never had issues then either.

My husband commented this morning that he thought babies needed it and at ever diaper change so he wanted to know where the powder was. We only have some b/c my MIL bought it.

Should I be using it? Does it matter? If they aren't getting rashes, is it really an issue?

Feel free to research it yourself but baby powder is not safe to use on babies. Some of the problems it can cause are:
pneumonia, inflammation (or swelling) of the airways of babies, and even death. There are some studies to say that it has been linked to cancer as well...but there is no distinct evidence on that.

WHA?????

It can cause problems? YIKES! We use it A LOT! I especially like using it after their bath to help them dry off a little better,before putting their diaper on.

Whoa. I guess I need to do some serious research!

I never use it. I read somewhere you shouldn't- and my pedi said something about it too....

Wow. Clearly I missed the bus on that one! I have read two articles now and both say what the above poster mentioned but this is on J&J website:

t's a classic. JOHNSON'S® Baby Powder helps to eliminate friction while keeping skin cool and comfortable. It's made of millions of tiny slippery plates that glide over each other to help reduce the irritation caused by friction.

* Helps eliminate friction
* Clinically proven to be safe, gentle and mild
* Allergy and dermatologist-tested
* Clean, classic scent

For skin that feels soft, fresh and comfortable, apply JOHNSON'S® Baby Powder close to the body, away from the face. Shake powder into your hand and smooth onto skin.

How to Use

When to Use
Use anytime you want skin to feel soft, fresh and comfortable. For baby, use after every bath and diaper change.

Safety

For external use only. Keep out of reach of children. Close tightly after use. Do not use on broken skin. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep powder away from child's face to avoid inhalation, which can cause breathing problems.

So, basically they say it is okay, but it is not okay....weird!

I just want to add...there are powders that contain talc which is not good and others that don't (cornstarch based). The cornstarch ones are safer...try not to use ones with talc though...

Nope. Baby Powder contains talc which is not good to breathe in. You can use cornstarch, but I've heard that it gets clumpy. I just fan off their bottoms w/ the new dipe and apply CA Baby stuff (diaper lotion stuff) if they need it.

This is all very interesting. I had never heard any of this. I was just thinking if there was no rash they didn't need anything on their little private area. Will have to look into this and talk to their ped on the 9th when we go in.

I, too, had never really heard of this before the girls were born. I received several large containers of it in various gift baskets. It wasn't until a lady from my work came over (who ironically doesn't have children yet) and saw them and made a comment that I did some research. So now I have about 3 large containers that I won't use and i'm not sure what to do with them. I would rather give them to goodwill than throw them away, but I'm concerned that someone will unknowingly use them on their baby. Are there any legit uses? (I think I have heard some people put it in their shoes?)

Talcum powder used on girls has been linked to problems with ovarian function at a later date. It has been seen on various biopsies of the reproductive organs decades later.... A big no no in this household.

I have heard from my parenting class as well as other articles have discouraged the use of baby powder. As pp have said, it is bad for babies. I don't use it at all. We use vasoline now if we have to, we luckily have not had an issue with rashes.
