The last few days our local radio station has made an announcement about baby pouches. It says that tiny babies have been suffocating in them cause they can't lift or move their heads and fall asleep and get smothered. Anyone else hear anything about this?

Yes, it is one specific type of sling. Consumer reports has something posted on it.

Interesting that it says "that many of the babies who died in slings were a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had a cold."

I used slings with my LOs and I was a little concerned when they were in the cradle position. I made sure they weren't slumped over. According to the msnbc article, tummy to tummy is safer. A Moby Wrap might be a good alternative.

Any hold in a carrier where the baby is upright and not in a cradle position is better. I've never been able to use a sling comfortably because of the way my body is shaped. I always felt that my boobs were smooshing the baby by either being placed under the boob or right on top of it, either was suffocation was a worry. By having the baby upright, either in a front carry or on your back, keeps the baby's head and a clear passageway for breathing.

Thanks for the info! I read about that and I will be returning it to be safe. One of my babies had a low birth weight, DD @ 4.6 oz. and they both have a cold right now. I tried it with my DS and he looked uncomfortable on it, he was struggling and then just fell asleep.. scared me! I thought he passed out. Took him off it right away... he was okay but better be safe than sorry.

I've gotta tell ya, I've never been a sling person. It always made me a little nervous the way the baby sits in them, that they could get slumped and not be able to breathe.
