Our NICU told us these monitors do not prevent SIDS and only increase anxiety. We have a Summer video monitor and added the extra camera. We like it so far (we've only used it for 2 weeks though).

I thought about getting that one, but I figure they will be sleeping together for a while, so it wouldn't really work. By the time I separate them, I probably won't be worried about them not breathing. We are going with the handheld Summer Infant video monitor with the extra camera.

I thought you meant a monitor for the room to hear in your room or other parts of the house from your title.

We didn't have any monitors, even after our NICU stay, so I'm no help on that. Just curious why you are planning to get them?

I do mean room monitors... that is the one my SIL suggested. I don't think the pad thing is necessary. any suggestion??

If you aren't going to use it with the pad, then you might as well just go with a regular monitor for a lot less $. I like to go onto different sites like Babies R' Us or Walmart and read the reviews. I sort them by top rated and that is how I usually make a decision.

I have the AngelCare monitors and I love them. I don't think I would be able to sleep without them. They won't work if you have them in the same crib, but once you separate them you can use them. These are great if you end up with belly sleepers. They are pricey, but totally worth it.

I thought about the Angelcare, but mine will be sleeping together. Plus, you would have to get 2 and that's a LOT of $$. I got the Sony Babycall.

Oh because those aren't what I think of for room monitors. Those are more to tell you if that babies stop breathing. We have the Fisher Price Sounds and lights monitor.

I have the Angel Care Monitors too and I love them. They give me peace of mind. They don't prevent SIDS but it alerts you to give you time to react opposed to not even knowing that the babies have stopped breathing. Baby Depot inside of Burlington Coat Factory sells them for $75.00 a lot less than BRUs. For peace of mind......I think it's worth it. :D

We also have the FP Lights and Sounds monitor. We got it b/c it was the cheapest one. Despite being inexpensive I think it works great! I'm glad we didn't spend more money. It is very sensitive -- sometimes I have to turn it way down b/c it will pick up every little thing. At first I didn't get the point of the lights but it's actually very helpful. I can watch a movie and have the monitor turned down way low, and as long as it's within my view I can see if they are making noise. Also helps when I want to see if they are going back to sleep on their own put don't want DH to be awakened by additional noise.

We have the angelcare ones and they were expensive but totally worth it to me. I don't worry about SIDs at all - We have had a couple of false alarms but it hasn't been a bit deal really. There is no point in buying Angelcare unless you use the pad - they do have a good resale value

    We have this one:
    http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2265157
which I like, but it's very easy to bump the button that changes the channel on the handheld units. They are very sensitive, though.

We had the Evenflo Whisper Connect 900Mhz Tria Nursery Monitor, which I LOVED because you can use the handheld units as walkie talkies to talk to each other or to the nursery base. BUT after about a year they went on the fritz and I had to send them back to Evenflo for fixing. We got the other set to use while the Evenflo's were being repaired. Our house is a split level and you can't hear anything from one level to the next, so having the walkie talkie feature was a great help.

Whatever set you choose, make sure you check that they are compatible with cordless phones, if you have them. The 900MHz ones are good.

Honestly, I got a regular monitor but when my babies moved from our room to the nursery I wanted more. I got a video monitor (Summer Infant) and bought an extra camera. I have a camera on each crib and the monitor allows me to switch between them. It is the perfect amount of reassurance for me. I can turn the video part off at night when I am sleeping and still get the sound, and then if they make noises, I just touch a button on top and the screen lights up and I can see them. A very worthwhile investment, I think.
