Around what age do they start eatting baby food?

 

It does vary. It is recommended to wait until 4-6 months, and waiting longer is said to be better. Mainly because their stomach may be to immature to process the food, etc. There is alot of information out there on it. I started mine at 6 months.

 

I agree with Liz, it varies by ped. Our ped starts rice cereal at 4 months and then fruits/veggies at 5 months. Some peds wait until 6 months to start cereal though, so it just depends on what your ped does.

 

It really depends on the babies. I've known some who made it to nearly a year with hardly anything solid, but mine were always ready about six months. I think there are two key indicators: when they start grabbing food off your plate and sticking it in their mouth and if you're breastfeeding, when you can't eat enough to keep up anymore. Teeth and ability to sit up are good signs. Supposedly they don't need solids for nutrition until nearly a year, so it's really just what you want to mess with and how hungry they are.

 

American Academy of Pediatricians recommends exclusive breastfeeding (or formula) until 6 months. "Keeping up" shouldn't be a problem in terms of supply if you're nursing often enough, but babies really do start to get too interested in solids to keep them away from them. Our pediatrician wants them to have 3 meals a day by 9 months, and we're gradually working up to that.
