Baby doesn't cry when he really should

I either have a really easy going baby, or he's got a very high tolerance for pain and things that should bother him! He doesn't cry unless he's hungry or wants to be held.

The thing that worries me is he sometimes spits up his entire bottle at once. I can usually tell when it's going to happen because it will start to sound like he can't breathe for a while, and is struggling, and then boom! The entire bottle he drank comes out at once and even goes up into in his eyes. But, he doesn't even blink or think about crying! I clean out his eye and he is still as calm as ever. Does this sound normal? I would think he would start crying in pain or something! He just doesn't cry in situations that I would think would bother any baby.

We didn't have the spitting up an entire bottle but our one girl hardly ever has tears -- EVER. Fussy and grizzly yes but hardly a real tear.

I had one that was like that. She would burp up her bottle as if it were nothing.

I had one like that, too. She still doesn't make a fuss if it's something GI related. But if her sister touches her and she's in the wrong mood, she screams. :pardon:

I had two very very happy newborns. (They are still pretty easy-going, especially Lily). I also had a few occassions when a baby spit up the entire bottle right after eating.

There is a little valve in their stomaches (don't know what it's called) that opens and closes to let food in and out, and when they are first born that valve is not mature yet, so sometimes if you fill their bellies too much, it all comes back up. I'm going to see if I can find anything online about this to help.

article that mentions the little valve

The good news is that once my babies were 3 - 4 months old and that valve matured, the spitting up the whole bottle thing never happened again. We also switched them to the AR formula.

My girls were like that. They were very vocal about expressing their needs but usually didn't cry for things like getting hurt or projectile spitting up their entire bottle. I wouldn't have called them easy babies but I did appreciate that we didn't have break-downs for every little bump. In contrast, Dax is a lot more sensitive than his sisters were and I think I've spent more time comforting him from tiny hurts than I did with his sisters combined.

BTW, a lack of discomfort when spitting up is usually a good way to know that it's just spit up and not reflux. :)

my girl is that way. only cries if shes hungry or has a poopy diaper. once i moved her around too much after eating and i swear almost the whole bottle came back up, even some dribbled out her nose and she only sputtered and looked at me like, what the heck was that! i wish my boy were a lil more laid back! lol

Yup I have a happy spitter-upper. In the beginning he would spit up all the time - but it never really bothered him, he never cried about that. But his sister on the other hand would cry and cry over a tiny burp!

Thanks everyone, this is very helpful. I'm such a worry wart, lol! He's definitely a laid back little guy. :)
