Baby Dandruff

Since starting daily swim lessons so I've noticed that Lily's scalp is very dry. Her hair is still so thin that you can see her scalp right through her hair and it's peeling pretty bad. I tried putting baby oil on it the last time I gave her a bath - but all that did is make her have an oily looking flakey head.

Has anyone else experienced this? How can I get rid of the dandruff?

    TIA!

Oh no! I didn't know dandruff was unusual in babies, I figured it was just her skin being dried out from the chlorine - I have noticed some other dry spots on both of them but I just put some baby oil in their bath water and put some lotion on them when they get out of the tub. I guess I will have to call the pedi tomorrow.

She may be pre-disposed to dry skin Aimee. Maybe the pedi can refer you to a dermatologist. Let us know what they say.

I called yesterday and the pedi said it probably is due to the chlorine drying her out and to use Selson blue, once a week and not wash her hair more often than that.

Now I'm wondering how I'm going to be able to wash her hair with adult shampoo - it always gets in their eyes when I rinse and I don't want to burn her eyes. Anyone have any suggestions about that?

    OKay, here's what I did:

I put vaseline on their scalp, let it sit for a bit, scrubbed it in with a baby brush to loosen the flakes, then washed it out. If she's going to be swimming frequently you might want to look into a swim cap for her or slathering her head (thank goodness for baby hair still, right!?) with vaseline before she goes in.

You might want to try mineral oil. It does wonders for cradle cap! She will definitely end up with a greasy head, but a few applications should clear it up. I applied directly to area after bath [or maybe after swimming] for 2 days and wash. I was always afraid to use dandruff shampoo on 'em.

    Good luck!

One of my kids' allergy reactions is the whole eczema/dry skin thing. They get that dandruff/cradle crap type stuff. I ALWAYS use Selson Blue or some sort of dandruff shampoo. I am very careful to put a cloth over their eyes, and just am so much more careful with it. After one or two washings, it clears it up until the next time. It's a pain, but such an easy solution.

Jake still has issues with cradle cap and I use Head and Shoulders on him. I just get a big bucket type thing that will wash almost all of the soap out of his hair with one dump and cover his eyes with my hand.

Use Dawn dish soap, I used it on my girls cradle cap last summer, two washings and it was gone. Just don't get it in their eyes.
