My baby cannot poop without us giving her a suppository. Immediately after putting it in she will go. It shoots out like a water gun. We know we can't over stimulate her or she will never go but it is so hard to watch her strain all day and never go. We are giving her a suppository every other day. We see the Dr 2Morrow. Anyone have any experience with this? Its awful!

They won't consider a baby constipated until about 7 days have gone by without going. So, I would let nature try to have a turn. You don't want to over do the stimulation because she'll learn to rely on it. I know it's SO hard to wait and watch and wonder

We are dealing with this sort of with my DS... he goes a few times a day but always small, hard poops. Suppositories didn't really work, although they provided some relief. We were at the dr on Thu and she said she felt a lot of poop in his belly. She recommended Miralax. We gave it to him for 3 days before he had a major unloading, so to speak, and now we're not sure whether to keep it up as preventative or not. I need to call the dr to see how to proceed. I have heard that something like Miralax is not habit forming and that it can/should be used until the body gets used to producing normal bm's.

It sounds like your DD may still be quite constipated. I think that sometimes watery stools can be a sign of constipation and not diarrhea. I hope the dr can give her some relief and you a plan of action!

A couple of questions....is the baby formula or breast fed....

if formula, you might want to switch to a different one....if breast...are you taking any supplements that could cause the constipation?

I hope your little one feels better real soon!

My babies are formula fed, so I'm not sure this would apply to you, but my pedi suggested giving the constipated baby a little extra water in their formula. Now when Ashley (my constipated one) starts getting those hard poos, I add a little more water to her formula to help her release!!

But I agree, you don't want to continue using suppositories so that she relies on them. Like a pp said, try not giving them to her & see how long it takes her to go. If she skips a day that's OK.

A little pear juice and water seems to do the trick with my babies. I normally give them one ounce of pear juice with one ounce ofwater every other day. DH started to have issues with constipation when I started adding rice cereal to his bottle for his spitting up.

My son was like this. He wasn't constipated because when he did go, it was soft. He would cry trying to poop. It would be a 20 min. ordeal to get him to poop. Sometimes I used the thermomater and that helped. Most times I would lay him on the table, lift his legs and just keep wiping. He would go and man would he go! I've never seen so much poop in my life! One day, it just stopped and he went on his own without help. My pedi said he probably doesn't like the sensation of pooping. Sorry you are going through this. Hopefully it will just correct itself soon! Oh, I would also give him some apple juice. Not baby apple juice, just Motts 100% juice.

It's been over 72 hours since my dd has pooped on her own. we have not given her a suppository or used a q-tip/suppository at all to see if she would go her on her own-she hasn't. she is very gassy and fussy but hasn't pooped...should we wait it out a little longer or give her a suppository. i'm so confused about her condition and just don't understand what is going on with her. she used to poop but has stopped. she has always strained to go -since birth. she is not constipated...her poop has been soft everytime she goes-on breastmilk. we are seeing a gastro next tuesday. i hope he can help us with this problem....any advice??

Breastfed babies can go 7 days and it is still considered NORMAL! I am sorry if she feels uncomfy. My guys up until we started solids only pooped every 7 days or so....man was that nice! I hope all is well when you take her to the Gastro.

Breastmilk digest in the babies and there are not alot of "left overs" so they don't always have as much to push out.

I agree what Diane said. If you continue with 'help' the baby will come to rely on it and will not be able to go on her own.

did you say your babies only pooped every 7 days? did they grunt, strain and fuss all the time too-trying to poop? i hate watching her like this. she is having a hard time. she used to go great on her own until we started rice cereal and then she had an upper gi where she had to drink that white stuff. now she is only on bm and is still having a tough time. however she has till grunted and starined from the beginning when she is trying to poop. why???
