Baby A not growing at same rate as Baby B

I have been going every two weeks to my high risk dr since the beginning of my pregnancy and seeing my reg ob in between. I am getting Pegestroe shots weekly and also am taking Procardia and getting NST's 2x per week. I had spontanous twins in 2009 losing one to TTTS at 28w 4d...Now I am pregnant with spontaneous di di twins.

My question is this...today I went for my bi weekly appointment and the babies are not growing at the same rate. Dr said that blood flow is good and that he just needs to keep an eye on it that this sometimes happens even with DI DI twins. He said that TTTS can still happen with DI DI but it is HIGHLY unlikely, but that is the same thing that I was told the last time and still it happened. He said he will not give me the shot for the lungs "just in case"

Last weights of the babies were both 2.5 and today they were 2.10 and 3.4.. He said to not expect Baby A to catch up. How worried should I be?

I just had an appointment and was told baby a was growing smaller too. I have another ultrasound next week but doc told me hes only concerned if the gap keeps widening. If they are both still growing at a good pace then he will just monitor it. At 30 weeks baby a was around 1600 grams and baby b wad over 1900. That was the first time a size difference was so noticeable. He also said ultrasounds can be off so another one will help determine if we should be concerned.
Did your doc schedule another ultrasound to check their progress? Also the weights you quote make it sound like one has lost weight so maybe the ultrasound weights were just inaccurate. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sounds like just the difference in babies but its good he's being proactive. Better to watch and be aware than to find the issue when it's too late.

@ mom2nathan I should have been more clear...both babies were 2 lbs 5 oz two weeks ago. This week they measured 2 lbs 10 oz and 3 lbs 4 oz

I am scheduled for a follow up appointment on Decemeber 20th

I know that I am so terrified because of the loss of during our last twin pregnancy. It is going to be a LONG 10 days.

Another thing that I remember him mentioning is something about the smaller babies abdomen?

To all those mothers that have had easy pregnancies...I hope they truely know how lucky they are!

I am in the same boat as you. Baby A is measuring smaller. 2 weeks ago they were A- 1 lb 1 oz and B- 1 lb 9 oz. Yesterday they were A- 1 lb 9 oz and B- 2 lb 4 oz. They are keeping a close on me too. As of right now they said everything else looks good so I guess I need to trust what they say and just keep going to my appts. A couple of the ladies told me to increase my protein intake. I have been taking a protein shake a day and extra rest. Whatever the case- it can't hurt. Keep us posted!

I had Mono-di twins, and my baby A measured smaller too. Her abdomen measurement was smaller accordingly than her head and femur measurement. I think we found that out at 28 or 30 weeks. He had me come back in 2 weeks and he redid those measurements to see if they had changed. They were still the same, meaning the abd. measurement was still smaller, but at the same rate, which he was ok with... was just worried that the abdomen measurement would get smaller. I was just seeing a regular OB...no specialist. Nothing else worried him so he didn't send me. He told me to increase protein intake in the foods I was eating. When they were born, my baby A was 9 oz smaller and 2 inches shorter. She looked smaller, but not unhealthily so. She's now pretty much caught up with her sister.

With the fact that they were at the same size definitely makes a difference. Jessy had poor flow in the umbilical cord as well as well as only having 2 vessels. She was diagnosed with having IUGR. From 24-34 weeks she only gained around 3 oz a week where jazz gained at least 8 oz or more. Nsts are a joke for twins IMO. They never could get the girls to register correctly due to their positioning. We did biophysical profiles twice a week.

I am heading to see my reg ob this morning. I am hoping that she has the mfm's report. I have my list of questions in hand and will almost "insist" she do another ultrasound to see if she detects any issues.

So my reg ob said she doesn't think that there is anything to worry about yet (she didn't have the report from last Saturday yet). She said since the blood flow was good between the baby and the cord then I should just wait for the next appointment with him on the 20th and see if there has been an positive progress. They did do an ultrasound but took no measurements...it was reassuring seeing the babies on the monitor though.

I will start seeing her weekly now, which I am very happy about. She is hoping that I make it to 34 weeks I am hoping for 36. In any case she said if I go into labor before 34 weeks then I will be admitted and put on the magnisum salfatue to try to stop the contractions. If I make it to 33 weeks she is going to order the shots for the lungs as a prevenative measure since they can not administor them after 34 weeks. I was very reassured by her proactive approach.

Pray that things go well on the 20th!

Good news! I went for my ultrasound today and they gap was the same and not widening so the doc wasn't concerned. Baby A was 3 lbs 13 oz and Baby B was 4 lbs 10. So I'm relieved as well. Enjoy the last few weeks....the real work is yet to come.

I am skeptical about any di di twins having TTTS. I have never heard of this. I had twin girls who shared nothing, and one was much smaller all along. They termed it "IUGR" Inner Uterine Growth Restriction. We watched them very carefully, but at full term they were born perfectly healthy at 5.7 and 6.10 and came home with me two days later. Today they are 5 and "baby B" is still 5 lbs lighter than her sister. Sometimes one is just naturally smaller!

@MamaKimberlee do you remember how often you were seen by your high risk ob? Mine still only wants to do ultrasounds once ever 14 days but NST's 2x a week.

I had an appointment today. In two weeks the babies only grew 5 oz and 2 oz...he said the blood flow was good but baby A's abdomen is still measuring small. I asked what this meant and he said it could mean complications after birth but he didn't elaborate.

Of course I came home and "Googled" small abdomen and it said could be a sign of IGUR?

I am concerned of the small weight gain over a two week period...any reassuring stories?
I am aware ultrasound measurements could be off but they have been pretty consistant. Go back in 1 week.

Forgot to mention on the other thread, with DD I had an undetected 'secondary placental lobe' and her weight gain slowed significantly towards the end. She was 5lbs2oz when she was born full term. And I know its hard, but try to stay away from google!!

I did no have anythign related to IGUR, but my girls did have a significant weight difference of almost a pound during my pregnancy and they had my worried from about 27-32 weeks til it changed and baby b caught up with a. I know its not the same of what you are going through, But I jsut wanted to send my thoughts your way! I have been thinking about you. I remember going through so much and so many scares and worries during my difficult pregnancy, and im having flash backs of it all. jUst try and remember this, you can not change anything all you can do is realax, drink plenty of water, and take care of your self. Worrying will not help you or those precious babies, and google is the devil. :) Everything will turn out fine, you are getting so close now! I wish you the best, and happy thoughts. Easier siad than done, i know. but you are not alone out there. so many of us experienced or are experiencing what you are going through. you can do this mama! prayers for two healthy babies sent your way!
